DON PEDRO LAKE
Trolling Yields Kings, Rainbows and Kokanee
LA GRANGE – Variety is the key to fishing Don Pedro Lake at this time.“ The past few trips to Don Pedro have produced many fish, mostly king salmon,,” said Monte Smith of Gold Country Sportfishing.“ However, on Tuesday’ s trip we had seven salmon, three rainbows, one bass and a crappie.. We are starting to put a few kokanee in the fish bag also.” Smith was running Pro Troll Kokanee Killers, tipped with white corn on downriggers.“ The salmon hit at 35 to 50 feet and the rainbows at 27 feet,” he stated.“ The rainbows ranged from 1-1 / 2 to 2-1 / 2 pounds, while the kings went from 13 to 16 inches long.” He also trolled with Scatter Raps at 7 to 20 feet deep for the salmon and trout. The crappie measured 13 inches long, while the bass went 14 inches. One boater reported catching a 26 inch king salmon out of Moccasin Point Marina, Smith noted.“ The upcoming weather pattern is looking great, so if you’ re wanting to get out and enjoy a day on the lake, now is the time,” he observed.

look like we’ ll get one or two more moderate storms, but for the most part, conditions have settled and some of the best action of the season is on the way! Lake Chabot, Lake del Valle, Shadow Cliffs and Quarry all received trout plants this week, and these lakes are, for the most part, in good shape. The improved conditions, heavy plants and holdover fish have made for some great trout action. Pre-spawn bass action is picking up, and we’ re seeing an uptick in catfish. There has been some weed growth, but it’ s still in the early season stages. As the season progresses, you can pick almost any of the EBRPD lakes and expect to go home having had a good day! Not everyone is limiting out,( I actually got skunked mid-week), but most anglers can expect some decent action and some nice take home fish! Lake del Valle has finally kicked into high gear! The lake had suffered from low water and then clouded out following the early season rains but is back up and water conditions are good. There has been a solid trout bite and anglers are now taking fish, including lightning trout, along the East Swim Beach shoreline. Jigs, spoons, and Powerbait have all been working. The shoreline along the Narrows and beyond is also fishing well.
Bass action has picked up and anglers are now taking some pre-spawn fatties, from both the shoreline and the boats. Prespawn bass can be aggressive, and a mix of lures can produce. Try paddle tail plastics, plastic worms, crawfish patterns and skirted bass spinners. The smallmouth bite has been a bit hitmiss but should also be picking up. The smallies tend to hold slightly deeper than the largemouth, around 20 feet, and are often targeted by boat anglers trolling Rapalas along the rock wall on the far side of the narrows. Shadow Cliffs remains one of

the most consistent EBRPD trout producers and this past week was no exception. The shoreline on each side of the boat ramp generally produces, but the far dock beyond the tube has been very good. The whole shoreline from the boat ramp to the swim beach produces but you might have to pick your way around some of the shrubs. Shadow is a top producer and gets very crowded. Arrive early to find a spot and expect to get to know your neighbors. Quarry Lakes Park including Horseshoe Lake, Grau and Shinn Ponds – produce a mix of fish including trout, bass catfish and carp. Horseshoe Lake is generally considered a trout lake and action has been good. The lake is turning over, and there has been serious weed growth in some areas, including the Cove and anglers should consider Fisherman’ s Row, or the peninsula.

Though not considered a major bass lake, Horseshoe has also been kicking out the occasional prespawn largemouth. Shinn Pond has been very good for bass to three pounds and there was a small striper taken this past week. Old timers do remember fishing for stripers in Shinn, but it’ s been a while since one was reported. Catfish and carp action should be picking up as well. No reports from Grau, but bass should be on the bite. Contra Loma is a very good trout lake but is also one of the better bass lakes in the region. The prespawn bite is on and there have been some nice fish taken. Bass fishing there can be a challenge. Access to most of the best bass cover is limited along the shoreline and most fish are taken by anglers fishing from kayaks or other personal watercraft. Despite limited access, there are some very good areas on both sides of the ramp, as well as the shoreline beyond the swimming pool, and along the shoreline to Quail Cove. Trout anglers tend to fish the cove adjacent to the ramp, the rocks, or any of the three docks. Lake Temescal has finally gotten back into shape, but the recent rain will add some stain to the water. After a tough month, Teme has finally started to fish well. The lake has been heavily planted, and pressure has been light due to the weather. Conditions and action will only improve. The EBRPD has done a great job cleaning up the shoreline and creating additional access, but this is a very small lake, and it gets very crowded. Arrive early to get a spot.
