FRESHWATER REPORTS:
CONTINUED FROM PG 15
PYRAMID LAKE
close to shore to spawn. Reports of fish in the 12 to 18 pound range are fairly common, and are being caught all over the lake in shallow water. The choronamid bite is going strong with fly fisherman. Indicator fishing with a size 12 zebra midge to match the choronamid has been best. Many fishermen are throwing spoons and spinners from shore and catching nice fish as well. Also crank baits in a variety of styles from scatter Raps to Wiggle Warts. Boaters have been trolling U-20 flatfish, Mag Lips in 3.5 inch and 3” Tomic and Lyman style plug baits with and without side planers. Trollers are catching fish from the surface down to about 35 feet at 2.2 to 3.0 mph. It seems like the trollers are catching smaller fish than the shore fisherman. The fish are in their bright spawning colors with the males showing gorgeous red, gold and copper colors and the females are full of eggs. Fish are stacking up around the south nets and other shallow areas of the lake getting ready to spawn. The water temperature starts about 44 degrees in the morning and up to about 50 in the afternoon on calm days. As the water warms, the spawn will be over and the fish will disperse into deeper water all
over the lake. Colors vary from day to day. Sunny days natural chub patterns and watermelon has been good.. Darker cloud cover days use brighter colors like florescent oranges, yellows and chartreuse in combination with glow is the best. Cory Kellar of Hendrix outdoors was out last week and had a very memorable day. He was fishing with Hans Grotewold of Laceys Guide Service and Hans was showing him how to cast and fish a two-handed 11 1 \ 2 foot switch rod. They were in about 5 feet of water and casting to a shelf about 8 to 10 feet deep. Hans fixed him up with a two fly rig with a leech on the top and a bead head nymph on the bottom with an indicator. Cory did a couple of practice throws, and then on his first cast, he stripped the line in a couple of times and his indicator disappeared! About 20 minutes later, after being run all around the boat, Hans netted a stunningly colored 18 pound male cutthroat! Not bad for a first cast! Cory landed 5 other trout that day from 7 to 12 pounds as well. There is now a check station for the Golden Mussel just before Sutcliffe. It is open 7 days a week now from early morning to about 3pm. They will check your boat inside and out for water. You have to lower the engines to see if they contain water. If you’ re clean and dry you can launch at the ramp at Pelican Point. If they find water in your boat, they will do a decontamination for a fee of $ 20.00
This angler and friends had a great day sturgeon fishing on a beautiful calm day on the bay with 10 hookups and 8 sturgeon landed.
