For the uninitiated, Dick Nites are thin bladed wobbling spoons that do an excep- tional job of imitating baitfish. These spoons come in a range of sizes from super tiny to about 2 7/8 inches long. When the going gets tough rig a tiny chrome Dick Nite on a 6 pound test fluorocarbon leader add a split shot 36 inches above the spoon and top line troll it at 1 mph 100 feet behind the boat. Some anglers reported catching their limits while using chartreuse bait recently, reported Dena Oneto of the Rocky Mountain Recreation Company. The latest plant of 500 pounds of by Cal Kellogg hot commodity among trout trolling fishermen in the know. Like any dodger, the Dick Nite Dodgers are utilized ahead of a lure, bug, hoochie or any other trout bait in order to add additional action and attraction. As you would expect, one of the most popular pairings with these dodgers are the classic Dick Nite Spoons in the size No. 2. The key to realizing the full potential of this combination is the length of the leader; the consensus when using this setup is a leader length of 18-24” which causes a slower, more deliberate swimming action that has proven deadly on trout as well as kokanee. On days when the river is fishable, both fly guys and conventional tackle anglers are getting plenty of action from wild rainbows and the occasional steelhead. According to The Fly Shop in Redding, top flies include Dark Lords, Eng Things, Black Silvey’s and Rubber Legs. Mike Bogue of Mike Bogue’s Guide Service is offering conventional tackle trips on the river for anglers interested in fooling trout with crankbaits, glow bugs, Pautzke salmon eggs and Pautzke cured roe. When working the shallower runs and riffles, Bogue utilizes back trolled crankbaits to cover the water. He probes the deeper water areas with bait and glow bugs. These deep water areas are seldom hit by the fly guys and the action can be very good as a result. If you’d like a crack at some wild rainbows in the Redding area with conventional tackle, give Robert Weese of Northern California Guide Service or Mike Bogue of Mike Bogue’s Guide Service a call. They are two of the best sticks on the river and will work hard to get you fish. To contact Weese, call (530) 755-7196. To reach Mike Bogue, dial (530) 246-8457. RIO VISTA Target Black Bass In Clearer Water from Mildred Island South SACRAMENTO – The sturgeon and striped bass fishing was just starting to improve on the Sacramento River in the Rio Vista area when the latest round of storms resulted in high, muddy flows on the river, making fishing very tough. Delta outflows at Freeport were 54,000 cfs at press time, while Delta inflows at Rio Vista were 55,279 cfs. “There isn’t much fishing happening now in the Rio Vista region of the Delta, although I heard anglers were picking up some sturgeon before the storms,” said Alan Fong at Fisherman’s Warehouse.
