The Department of Fish and Wildlife provided the first bit of excellent news with the forecast of 379,632 adult Sacramento Valley salmon in the ocean, an increase from 229,400 adult salmon from a year ago. Within the next month, the Pacific Fisheries Management Council will set times and areas open for the 2019 recreational and commercial salmon seasons, and this data will be a major factor in their decision. The Pacific Fisheries Marine Council will finalize the recommended season dates at its April 9-16 meeting in Rohnert Park, Calif. The Golden Gate Salmon Association, which has been working diligently for the restoration of salmon stocks for the past several years, has been an integral part of the improvement, and GGSA President, John McManus, said, “We are looking forward to a good salmon fishing season this year.” “ In the meantime, Captain Rick Powers of Bodega Bay Sport Fishing and the New Sea Angler has been able to get out on occasion for crab- only trips, and he was able to make it out once this past week with 7 anglers Q ueen of H earts for limits of Dungeness crab. Powers has taken limits for every customer since the November 3, 2018 opener. The opening of rockfish season will bring back the private and party boats to the Pillar Point Harbor, and the area will come alive again for fishermen. The 15th Annual Sand Crab Classic Surf Perch Derby will be held out of Santa Cruz on Saturday, March 9th, and the event sold out within two days. Surf perch action has been solid for those able to endure the weather, and Lucky Craft’s Flash Minnows, Joe Bagg’s lures, and Berkley Sand Worms in natural color patterns are working for both surf perch and an increasing number of striped bass.
