tripers might hit a variety of
different trolled lures, yet you can
limit your lure selection to two different
models without hurting your success rate.
For shallow work in water that is 6 to 9
feet deep, a shallow running minnow plug
like a 5.25 inch Yo-Zuri Crystal Minnow
work great. At times when it is necessary
to work deeper water, say from 12 to 16
feet deep a deep diving Yo-Zuri Crystal
minnow is the choice of most anglers.
A unique aspect of Delta trolling is the
addition of a 6 or 7-inch plastic worm
to the back of your minnow plugs. The
worm most often used is a white Zoom
Trick Worm, but other brands and colors
of worms will work. The worm adds
vibration, action and size to your plug.
So how do you use these lures and tackle
to troll up a mess of stripers? Well let’s
begin by looking at a couple common
mistakes anglers make. First of all, most
anglers that are new to trolling Delta
waters tend to work water that is too deep
and they usually troll too slowly.
Stripers are aggressive hunters that
actively patrol shoreline structure in search
of prey. When you begin a day of trolling
you want to start out

water that is about 8
feet deep.
For this shallow
water work your
trolling speed and
the distance you put
the plug behind the
boat is critical. You
want to be moving
between 3.5 and 5

backdrop will put a shallow runner just
above the bottom in 8 feet of water.
If you fail to hook up in shallow water
or are marking fish in deeper water, it
is time to switch over to a deep running
Yo-Zuri. For this work you’ll want to
shorten your line to about 100 feet and
slow your speed to about 3 miles per hour
Bone Color Crystal Minnows Are
Designed Specifically For Stripers
Yo-Zuri Crystal Minnows come in a
long list of different colors. Just a few of
the favorite finishes and patterns for Delta
trolling a Blue Back Sardine, Red Head
Pear Body, Rainbow Trout, Clown, Candy
and Bronze Shiner.
Last summer the Yo-Zuri brain trust
unveiled a brand new color of Crystal
Minnow aimed directly at stripers and the
anglers that fish for them. The color is
Bone. It’s basically
an all white Crystal
Minnow, but it’s not
stark white. It’s off
white, the color of
bone.
Last fall a few
anglers gave these

them to be excellent
performers. The
results should be even
better this spring.

trips for stripers, salmon, and sturgeon on
the Sacramento, Feather, and Yuba River
systems. Salmon trips typically begin July
16 and run thru November or until the
quantity and quality of the fish decrease
substantially. The striper season runs from
is mid March thru May, while sturgeon are
targeted from mid December thru March
depending on water flows in the region.
MSJ fishes out of a twenty-one foot
custom aluminum Fish Rite jet boat which
can accommodate up to four anglers very
comfortably. The boat is powered by a
350 Chevy marine motor with a Hamilton
Jet, accompanied by an eight horse power
Yamaha kicker motor with a TR-1 gold
GPS auto pilot system. Two Lowrance fish
finders, one for the clients and one for the
captain, assist in locating the fish on any
given trip.
In his spare time, Capt.
Manuel enjoys scouting
the rivers for hot spots and
researching/networking the newest
tricks of the fishing trade, so he is
always prepared to provide the best
experience for his clients.
