BAJA FISHING REPORT
Spring Action Shapes Off Along East
Cape
“It has been a long winter but March has
finally arrived. We are still getting some
windy days but spring is on the way. I have
graduated back to short sleeves and flip flops.
We haven’t had to stoke up our fireplace for
more than a week and history tells me it is
time that our weather will just keep getting
nicer,” reported Capt. Mark Rayor of the Hotel
Buena Vista.
“There have only been a few boats fishing
which makes it difficult to get a good handle
on the action. I’m not seeing many flags and
the little I have heard is that it is still tough.
I did speak with a commercial snapper
fisherman who had some encouraging news.
The fish dope was that aside from an excellent
snapper bite while bottom fishing on high
spots off Buena Vista he has seen schooling
yellowtail breeze by his lights. I also heard
Cassman report striped marlin are starting to
migrate from Cabo San Lucas up the Sea of
Cortez,” said Rayor.
“The other day from our deck I saw pelicans
diving on bait. Also saw some incredible shots
from the beach of whales breaching right in
front of Playa del Sol. All the signs are right
and the East Cape is ripe to have the bite go
ballistic within the next few weeks. Last year
yellowfin tuna showed in March and it wouldn’t
surprise me to see it happen again,” Rayor
related.
“Our boats have been gone over from top
to bottom and ready to go. We don’t have a
scheduled trip for a couple of weeks but I am
going to slide them in the water next week
and start shaking them down for the season,”
Rayor concluded.
“It just doesn’t pay to get too excited. Last
week, I was optimistic that maybe we were
finally getting something going with some
hog yellowtail, dorado, wahoo and even a
tuna hookup and a marlin hook-up! These
are all species we generally don’t see this
early in the year. Things seemed like they
were picking up,” Roldan exclaimed.
“Then, Mother Nature kinda slapped
us back in place. The yellowtail bite near
Punta Perico and over at Cerralvo Island
diminished significantly. Bait got a little
harder to find…again! And overall, we were
left with a smattering of dorado; some
snapper; a cabrilla or two (although a few
were trophy-sized) and lots of bonito. Oh,
and one marlin just to keep us excited.
Overall just kind of a ho-hum week, even for
this time of the year,” Roldan disclosed.

of Cortez during an East Cape fishing trip out of the

Fishing Has Been “Hit And Miss” For
La Paz Anglers
“It was a hit-or-miss kind of fishing week,”
reported Jonathan Roldan of Tailhunter
International in La Paz. “The windsurfers and
kite boarders had fun with the continuing
winds, but even on the few days that were
fishable, the few anglers out found it less than
stellar although some fish were caught. There
are some quality fish around, that seem like
they’re just waiting to bust loose and as winter
pulls away, it’s like we two steps forward then
1 ½ steps back each week.”
Tuna have been the target for anglers fishing aboard
the Red Rooster III, but there have been some big
wahoo mixed in. This fish was landed in late February.
