For Trout Head To Bishop Country!
ishop is a popular Golden State trout fishing
destination during the regular open season,
the end of April through November 15th. Now, a
few more anglers are realizing that the year-round
waters are worth the trip, and just require a few more
clothing layers and some cold-weather gear. Quiet
and uncrowded, Bishop is the place to be.
The highlight of the year-round season is Bishop’s
annual Blake Jones Trout Derby that took place
this year on March 16. Both the Owens River and
Pleasant Valley Reservoir were primed with
heavy-weight broodstock and
rainbow trout. Fishermen
and women vied for
their share of more
than $10,000 in
prizes.
Pleasant
Valley
Reservoir
is a steady
winter
and spring
producer,
with
rainbow
and brown
trout filling the
stringers. Fly fisher
folks favor the float
tube scene, and bait anglers
find more than a mile of easy shoreline access. Boating
is not allowed on the water.
Directly below Pleasant Valley Reservoir, the fly
angler will find a three mile stretch of designated wild
trout water on the Lower Owens River. Governed by
special regulations - catch and release barbless hooks
and no bait – this section of water, home to mostly
brown trout, has become recognized as one of the
premier fly-fishing locations in the state. Below the wild
trout area, general regulations where there are more
rainbows and wild browns.
For a little solitude, head
down to the Owens
River Gorge. It’s
a bit of a walk,
but worth the
journey.

Alpine County Is An Angling Paradise
W
ith more than 60 lakes and streams,
Alpine County is a fisherman’s delight.
On the east slope, the East and West Forks of
the Carson River offer miles of angling, while
the Mokelumne River dominates the west slope. In
between, dozens of creeks and streams offer catchable
and trophy sized Rainbow, Brook, and Brown Trout.
For lake fishing, Indian Creek Reservoir and Caples Lake
produce large Mackinaw and Rainbows, while Lake Alpine,
Union & Utica Reservoirs and Spicer Meadow Reservoir are
popular in the Bear Valley area. Many smaller alpine
lakes in the County offer great angling for Golden,
Brookies and Rainbows.
The Alpine County Fish and Game Commission
along with the Alpine County Chamber of
Commerce plant fish throughout the

Ken’s Is A Great Jumping Of Point For A Bridgeport
Reservoir Trout Fishing Adventure
Located just a short distance North of Bridgeport on Hwy
182, Bridgeport Reservoir is fed by the Upper East Walker
River, Robinson Creek, Swauger Creek and Buckeye Creek.
Below the dam on Bridgeport Reservoir is the beginning
of the famed brown trout fishery the East Walker River.
Bridgeport Reservoir has two privately owned marina/
campgrounds, Bridgeport Reservoir Recreation Area and
Paradise Shores RV Park, as well as plenty of public access
along the shore for both launching boats or tubes and
fishing.
There is all kinds of fishing to be done on Bridgeport
Reservoir, depending on the time of year you can fish from
shore, troll, fly fish, bait fish, throw lures or jigs, fish from
kayaks and tubes or whatever turns you on. There are great
numbers of brown and rainbow trout, as well as Sacramento
perch and carp. The largest brown trout to ever come out of
Bridgeport Reservoir weighed in at 22 pounds and in 2000
there was a brown caught that weighed 13lbs 14oz. 2 to 8
pound rainbows are quite common on Bridgeport as well.
Bridgeport Reservoir is a great place to catch some great
fish with the beautiful Eastern Sierra for backdrop!
