Go Fast, Catch Trout!
hile minnow plugs are an obvious choice
for fast trolling, many of us overlook a
small array of spoons, both new and old that can
make things happen on a fast troll.
The most famous and most readily available of
these spoons is the venerable Speedy Shiner. Of
course the name of this spoon alone is enough to
tip you off that this is a high-speed offering.
“The “Speedy Shiner” style of lure appears
to date back to the 1960’s,” says Peter Ridd of
Thomas Lures, makers of the Speedy Shiner. “The
lure probably originated in Maine. Back in those
days a lot of companies were turning out spinning
gear. It was customary then to offer a line of lures
to go with your gear. The Speedy Shiner style lure
was knocked off by a lot of different companies
by Cal Kellogg
and there have been a lot of slightly different
configurations of the spoon we market today.”
These days Speedy Shiners are offered in a
couple different sizes and a wide array of colors.
Overall I’d say that color is less important when
trolling quickly in the 2.5 to 4 mph range then when
moving slowly at traditional trout speeds of 2.0
mph or less.
If water clarity is anywhere near decent, I like to
go with natural colored lures. That means chromes
paired with hues of blue or purple for spoons. If the
water clarity is poor, super bright stuff like flores-
cent orange can give you an edge.
When the light level is low either early or late or
when the sky is overcast, black can be an absolutely
deadly color that few anglers ever think to try.

alifornia Inland Fisheries Foundation, Inc., (CIFFI), is
a volunteer operated, tax deductible 501 C3 non-profit
foundation, incorporated in the State of California, dedicated to
the enhancement of freshwater angling opportunities.
The cooperative efforts between CIFFI and the California
Department of Fish and Wildlife, and many partners, provide
necessary funding to sustain multiple species of fish in Califor-
nia’s lakes and reservoirs.
Founded in 1992, CIFFI is a success story in cooperative
fishery management, beginning with Project Kokanee, and now
providing assistance to many other projects.
Mark your calendars and enter into the 2019 Team Trout
Derby at Collins Lake on April 27. Collins Lake is brim full and
is being heavily planted so this should be an awesome event.

Tempt More Spring Trout With
Pro-Cure Scents by Cal Kellogg
very angler out there is looking for an
edge, something that will tilt the odds
in their favor and spring trouters are no
exception. One of the things that I rely on
to generate extra strikes throughout the
year is Pro-Cure fish scents.
Sometimes the bite is wide open
and you can catch trout without
adding scent. Other times when
the fish are totally inactive they
are tough to catch no matter how
much scent you slather on your
baits and lures.
The rest of the time when fish
aren’t really active, but aren’t
really turned off either is when
adding a bit of Pro-Cure Super
Gel can really pay dividends in
terms of generating those extra
strikes that can mean the differ-
ence between
a fair day and a
great outing.
So, what scents do
I use when targeting
spring and early
summer trout? Most
of the time spring
trout will be feeding
on either threadfin
shad or pond smelt.
Being a match the
hatch sort of angler,
I go with threadfin
shad and smelt
Pro-Cure Super Gels
when trolling, but I’ll often mix in sardine, anchovy
or tui chub.
When I’m slinging baits like Berkley
PowerBait or inflated worms off the bank I
really like to expand the selection of scents I
utilize. I still play with the baitfish scents,
but I really like sweet scents like anise,
predator, kokanee special, trout and
kokanee magic and carp spit.
My all-time favorite scent when
I’m bank fishing is anise krill. All
fish seem drawn to the scent of anise
and most trout and landlocked salmon
have a real taste for krill. I’ve found
anise krill Super Gel to be particularly
effective when confronted with cold
water and sluggish finicky trout.
