Boaters Battle Schoolie
Stripers
COLUSA – Boaters are now hooking
good numbers of stripers while fishing
out of the new boat launching facilities at
Colusa State Park.
“I found a school of schoolie stripers
while fishing by myself in my boat in
the Chico Straits,” said Craig Newton at
Willfish Bait and Tackle. “It was a scouting
run for my boat, so I didn’t spend a lot of
time fishing.”
“But I managed to land four keepers and
lose two others while drifting live jumbo
minnows. I kept just one fish, a 7 pounder.
The other private boaters I saw also had
one to two fish,” noted Newton.
The City of Colusa’s new Colusa Boat
Launch Facility grand opening took place
on December 28, 2018.
The ramp is located in the Colusa
Sacramento River State Recreation Area..
This area offers visitors campsites and
picnic sites also. For reservations, please
call City Hall at (530) 329-9198 Monday -
Thursday 8am-4pm.

LAKE DAVIS
Ice Comes Off Slowly
PORTOLA – Lake Davis is in its annual
transition from ice fishing season to open
water fishing – and few anglers have
been out fishing for the reservoir’s prized
rainbow trout lately.
“There is a little bit of open water at
Mallard, but I haven’t heard of anybody
out fishing yet, said Jeanne Graham
of J&J Grizzly Country Store and
Campground Resort. “It didn’t freeze last
night and it’s raining now, so that should
help the lake ice out.”
Ice out is always one of the most
exciting times to fish Davis or any other
Sierra Nevada Lake. Fishing should be
great when ice comes off the lake, due
to the abundance of rainbow trout in the
lake. The California Department of Fish
and Wildlife stocked 14,420 pounds of
rainbows in the reservoir in August 2018.
Bank anglers should toss out Power
Bait, Mice Tails and nightcrawlers for the
rainbows, while boaters should troll with
Dick Nites and Needlefish ear the surface
when the lake becomes fishable.

anglers.
The catfish bite
out here is slow but
steady with many
anglers fishing the
fallen trees that
dot the shorelines.
The catfish are also
moving in the reed
patches. A good rule
of thumb is if you
see carp moving, the
catfish are probably
around.
The bass bite has
been the highlight of
fishing at Del Valle

you are fishing from

of the lake provides
the perfect habitat for
the bass to spawn.
We recommend using

DON PEDRO LAKE
Bass Action Is Inconsistent
IONE – The bass bite remains
inconsistent with a 14-pound limit taking
the 75-boat Gallo tournament on Friday
with only 11 pounds qualifying for a
payment.
Catching numbers is not a problem,
but the quality bass have been hard to
locate. This is compared to the 23-pound
winning limit during last week’s Best Bass
Tournament event.
Ryan Cook of Ryan Cook’s Fishing was
on the lake this week, and he resorted
to plastics on the drop-shot or split-shot
in order to get bite. Trout and kokanee
trolling continue to be fair as the fish from
the surface to 30 feet with a variety of
gear including hoochies behind a dodger
or Needlefish. The lake dropped slightly to
80 percent.
