Here is some contact info for all three of the fine guides mentioned. Jason Thatcher (916) 997-2765, Robert Weese (530) 755-7196. Mike Bogue, (530) 246- 8457. Shore Cutthroat Bite Tapers Off QUARRY LAKES Big Rainbows Reward Spring Anglers FREMONT – As the weather warms up, the East Bay Regional Park District continues to plant rainbow trout in Horseshoe Lake, located in the Quarry Lakes Recreation Area. The park district stocked 750 pounds of rainbows the week of April 22 to 26 and 500 pounds the week of May 6-10. While most anglers are using PowerBait, nightcrawlers and other trout baits to hook their rainbows, Bob L. of Union City landed an eight-pound, 22-ounce rainbow trout while bass fishing. He was using a Senko from the Peninsula Point. Raj P. of Fremont caught three trout for a total weight of 10 and a quarter pounds. He was fishing with a mini-jig along Fishermen’s Row. 3810 RIO VISTA San Joaquin Stripers Remain on Big Bite Elaine took a trip to Collins Lake this month and nailed this husky largemouth bass. RANCHO SECO LAKE Time for Bass, Crappie and Redear Sunfish HERALD – Although SMUD’s annual trout derby is over, there are still some big trout swimming in Rancho Seco for anglers to pursue. 1,000 pounds of larger trophy size trout plant were planted on April 5 and another 500 pounds of trophy rainbows were stocked on April 6. A total of 6500 pounds of trout will have been planted by the end of this year. The surface water is now too warm to plant rainbow trout, but plants will resume this fall during the week of October 28 when 500 pounds of trophy rainbows will be stocked in Rancho Seco. To see the plant schedule, go to: https:// rockymountainrec.com/lake-facilities/ listing/rancho-seco-recreational-area Florida-strain largemouth bass, redear sunfish, crappie and bluegill are also available for anglers on the lake. The largest bass are taken in the late winter and spring during the pre-spawn, spawn and post spawn periods. Anglers nail them while using Huddleston and other rainbow trout swimbaits, Senkos, swimbaits, plastic worms, spinnerbaits and jigs. Rancho Seco Recreational Area is a 400-acre park overflowing with recreational opportunities including camping, boating, fishing, swimming and wildlife viewing. The 160-acre lake is fed by the Folsom South Canal and is a great year-round day or overnight getaway located in California’s Central Valley, just 25 miles from downtown Sacramento. As of press time the flow was around 6,500 CFS and expected to drop to 6,000 soon. Fly fishing guides, such as Jason Thatcher of River Pursuit Guide Service have been putting their clients on big numbers of wild rainbows while fishing the Sac. There are still a few spawning salmon in the river, but overall the trout are focusing way more on gobbling insects than seeking out eggs. With longer warmer days, hatches have really ramped up and the trout are responding. Gear anglers are using a combination of cured roe, beads and small crankbaits. Anglers back trolling crankbaits are getting the biggest number of hookups per outing because they are able to cover a maximum amount of water. Anglers have been hooking limits of stripers on most trips by James Netzel of Tight Lines Guide Service. “It’s crazy - even though we have huge tides, we’re still catching the fish while trolling out here,” said James Netzel of Tight Lines Guide Service. “Any color deep diving plug with a green tail is working today. We are hooking stripers up to 15 pounds.” Netzel’s anglers have been catching striped bass on most trips on the river while trolling with Yo-Zuri and P-Line Predator lures. “We had a mixed bag of sizes today, but my anglers wanted to get off the water before 90 degree temperatures set in.,” he added. “We released a 13 pounder to start out the day, then 2-9s, an 8, some 22”ers and a couple barely-legals trolling deep diving YoZuris in the San Joaquin side of the Delta.” “Oh, and a gazillion shorts. The weather is finally warming up, and the spawn is coming to an uneventful end. The crowds are ridiculous, and the hours spent per hook up are high. Most of the angling pressure at this time is from folks tired of a long winter and just happy to be out. The seething mass of humanity camped around Pelican and Windless Bays is absurd. The best fishing has been in this general area, and the beach and the rocks are packed. My buddy Eric commented, “There was a dozen guys standing on one rock- shoulder to shoulder. I didn’t see them catching many fish either. I also noticed that guys will show up at a beach, not catch any fish, and leave after half an hour or so.” This has been the story of the Pyramid spring shore bite in 2019 for the most part. Boaters are seeing a slight uptick in their scores. Working the bottom with U-20 Flatfish or top-lining Lyman’s has been a decent bet. As more and more fish finish up with the spawn, the trolling bite will drastically begin to improve. May should see a good bite north of Warrior’s Point. Meanwhile, the Truckee River is completely blown out and will remain so until at least late May or early June. The Truckee is downright dangerous to wade at this time. The color of the water isn’t the issue, it’s the sheer volume of the raging ice cold torrent. Anglers that could find a pocket of quiet water near the bank may be able to pluck the occasional trout, but don’t bet on it. - Mike McNeilly 21
