Photo courtesy of GOLD COUNTRY SPORTFISHING, Oakdale. “At that point, I thought I was in for a hot morning, but the bite shut down. I made two full circuits around the cove without a touch so I headed over to work around the fallen timber on the peninsula that divides the Bear River Arm from the Greenhorn Arm and I’m glad I did. On my first pass up the Bear River side I hooked a heavy fish that turned out to be a 22-inch brown. The fish wasn’t very heavy, but it sure was beautiful. I guess the lake was planted with rainbows recently. Shore fishing should be viable, but I didn’t see anyone fishing when I visited the lake,” exclaimed Pleece. “The same day I fished Rollins, Rex was bank fishing at Scotts with his wife Sierra. (530)238-2575 www.tsasdiresort.us COLFAX - Spring fishing is shaping up at foothill lakes including Rollins and Scotts Flat. Things should continue to improve as water temperatures climb. “I finally got into some browns at Rollins and my cousin Rex had a great afternoon of bass fishing at Scotts Flat,” exclaimed Jason Pleece of Meadow Vista. “The water at Rollins is still stained, but it has been clearing. I figured it was clear enough to give trolling a try so I took my kayak to the lake last Tuesday. I dropped in at Free Loaders and trolled around the corner into Long Ravine Cove with a single rod pulling a large gold and black Yo-Zuri Crystal minnow 100 feet behind the kayak. The lure was coated with rainbow trout scent Pro-Cure Super Gel,” Pleece disclosed. “I was about 50 yards into Long Ravine when a 15-inch brown hammered the plug. After releasing that fish, I continued down the shoreline. A few minutes later I got a 12-inch spotted bass. When I made it down to the launch ramp a 14-inch planter rainbow flashed on the big plug and got hooked in the gill plate.,” Pleece said. challenging on the Sacramento River, although flows have gone from what they were two weeks ago. The Sacramento River at the I Street Bridge was flowing at 59,794 cfs at press time. Until flows go down more and the area boat ramps open, bank fishing for stripers will remain the only option. “The Garcia Bend, Bryte, Discovery Park, and Elkhorn ramps remain closed,” said Dennis Pfanner at Sacramento Pro Tackle. Locals are hooking some schoolie stripers at Bryte Beach while tossing out pileworms. However, Pfanner recommended fishing the Feather River near Nicholas or the San Joaquin River near Rio Vista for the top fishing. Expect striper fishing in the Port of Sacramento to pick up as the water temperature warms. Bank fishermen should drift jumbo minnows or fish mudsuckers and bloodworms on the bottom. Boaters should troll with Yo-Zuris or other lures, toss out Rat-L-Trips or Alabama Rigs or jig with Bladerunner spoons - Dan Bacher Largest Service Center in the West!
