EL GRANADA - Salmon action went ballistic at the Deep
Reef by the middle of the third week of April with Bay Area
boats making the long run to join the Half Moon Bay boats.
The action has been outstanding for limits to near-limits
on every trip since the action started. Rockfish are another
option along with Dungeness crab, but right now salmon are
the big story.
However, the salmon season will experience a temporary
closure from May 1st through the 17th above Pigeon Point.
The Que Sera Sera came back with 12 salmon for 6
anglers on April 26, according to Sherri Ingles of the Half
Moon Bay Sportfishing Center. The Queen of Hearts
checked in with 280 rockfish and 3 lingcod for 28 anglers.
The Rip Tide had 22 king salmon for15 passengers.
Captain Dennis Baxter of the New Captain Pete is booking
out of Half Moon Bay Sport Fishing, and he also returned
with near-limits on Friday at the Deep Reef with 29 salmon
for 17 anglers. He said,
“We just couldn’t get those
last five.” Baxter will be
running salmon trips seven
days per week when the
temporary closure is lifted.
Captain Jerad Davis on
the Salty Lady took out
a group of 23 anglers on
Saturday including Mike
Aughney and Cat Kaiser of
the Golden Gate Salmon
Association, and they
returned with near-limits at
40 salmon to 15 pounds.
Davis said, “That kind
of action this early in the
season bodes very well
