SALTWATER VOL.38 • ISS. 14 salmon throughout the morning, but they were plagued with a marauding band of sea lions that took 8 of the fish off of the lines. Aughney said, “There were only three other boats out so the entire band of sea lions were feeding off of us. Improved weather will bring out more boats this week, and I expect salmon scores to take off. Captain Rick Powers of Bodega Bay Sport Fishing and the New Sea Angler still has the crab pots in the water until the season closure on June 30th, and he will pull the pots on occasion, Powers will be taking the rockfish/crab/salmon combination trips through the closure of Dungeness season before concentrating on rockfish/salmon combinations. The month of July should be outstanding, and reservations in both the campgrounds and on the party boats is advised as traffic at the launch ramp is expected to be very high, particularly on weekends. - Dave Hurley June 21 - July 5, 2019 FISHERMAN’S WHARF Halibut and Stripers Grab Live Bait in Bay SAN FRANCISCO - Anglers aboard the Bass Tub have been experiencing top-notch halibut and striped bass action in both south and central San Francisco Bay. “Most live bait trips are producing 2 to 3 fish per rod, a mixture of halibut and striped bass,” said Erik Anfinson, captain of the Bass Tub. “Most years the halibut fishing is slower on the bigger tides. 25 This year it doesn’t seem to matter whether the tides are big or small for the halibut to bite. Most of the halibut are going from 8 to 15 pounds.” The latest half day trip by the Bass Tub produced 26 halibut and seven striped bass for 13 anglers, noted Anfinson. A salmon charter on Saturday, June 8, produced tough fishing aboard the Bass Tub. “The 20 anglers bagged 6 salmon while trolling with anchovies off the Marin County Coast,” said Anfinson. - Dan Bacher CONTINUED ON PG 26 BAJA Cabo Anglers Bang Billfish “Another great week of fishing in Cabo,” exclaimed Capt. Tracy Ehrenberg of Pisces Sportfishing. “Quite a few highlights this time around, as we also had one of our Pisces boats, Pisces 72’ Tag Team, participate in the 1st Annual Robert Ross Tournament in Loreto, bringing back 1st place with 22 billfish released! In Cabo, we saw decent numbers of striped marlin around too, with the top boat being Pisces 31’ Tracy Ann with 5 striped marlin released in one day. Tuna and dorado were slow, with only a few caught of each, but the inshore fishing was excellent. Again, roosterfish, jack crevalle and red snapper, along with some yellowtail, grouper and triggerfish, were the main catches.” “Beginning the week off strong, Pisces 32’ Bill Collector and anglers from Texas, the Owens’ and Hauck families, did well to release 4 striped marlin. The fish ranged in size from 70 to 140 lbs each, and hit on dead caballito bait, slow trolled, out of the 11:50 Spot. The next day, Bill Collector did well again with 2 striped marlin released on live caballito bait out of Punta Gorda. While halibut have been the focus for anglers drifting live bait in S.F. Bay, there are some beautiful stripers in the mix too. They trolled dead caballito and also managed to spot a few marlin close to the surface and cast live bait. All fish were quite close in size, from 100 to 120 lbs for anglers Scott and Wesley Williams from Dallas, Texas. They also caught one of the only dorado of the week, which weighed about 15 lbs,” said Ehrenberg. “For inshore action this week, we saw Pisces 23’ Panga Samantha do an excellent job, consistently, starting off the week with 2 roosterfish and 1 jack crevalle This huge roosterfish was caught off the East Cape on May 2. released, and 2 red snapper.
