“On my latest morning adventure, I
caught and released 15 largemouths to
4-1/2 pounds in the Redbud Arm,” he
stated. “The fish were showing from the
surface to 30 feet deep. That water was
clear – you could see a lure in 6 to 8 feet
of water. The water surface temperature
has risen to 75 degrees.”
He noted that he saw one bass angler

the 12 lb. class while drop shotting with
Robo Worms.
A recent tournament produced a top five

The Bear River Lake Resort stocked
the lake prior to their annual trout derby
with 1,000 pounds of trophy rainbow trout
averaging 4 pounds each. The CDFW
planted 2,000 pounds of rainbows and
30,000 fingerling browns on May 28.
PG&E planted the lake also planted the
reservoir on June 12 with 1500 pounds of
rainbow at a half pound average.
Doug McArthur of Stockton won the
annual trout derby held at Lower Bear
River Reservoir in the Highway 88/Carson
Pass corridor on June 8 and 9 by catching
a 4.51 lb. rainbow.
Further up Highway 88, at Caples Lake,
shore anglers have been catching lots
of planted rainbows and some holdovers
while trolling flashers and worms from
boats and PowerBait and worms from the
shore, reported Joe Voss at the Caples
Lake Resort.
Both boat ramps at the lake are open
to launching and the marina is open, with
boats available for rental.
Boaters are hooking some mackinaw to
3 to 20 pounds while using Rapalas and
other lures. Bruno Huff of Gardnerville

Now’s the time to hit Clear Lake,
according to Tom Guercio of Tom’s Guide

“I’ve been catching and releasing 15

lures and jigs,” said Guercio. “The fish are
ranging in size from 2 to 5-1/2 pounds.

GREAT FISHING
AT CAPLES LAKE!
CLEAR LAKE
OREGON HOUSE - The spring surge
is over and trout fishing has settled into
a normal pattern for summer at Collins
Lake.
While the number of trout caught
each week doesn’t match the early May
mayhem we are still seeing 5, 6 and 7
pound trout on a regular basis. Trolling
around 35 ft. is a good strategy but with
ski season open and fewer boats trolling
overall most catches are coming in either
from shore or bait fishing in coves or from
boats near the dam.

I opted to pass on the BBQ a bid Marc

the shade.
Marc is a top notch guide and I look
forward to hitting the water with him in
the future. He is a true gentleman and
lots of fun to fish with. If you’d like to

FISH ON!
The trout put up a vigorous fight and
jumped several times. When I got it to
the net it turned out to be a thick 16 inch
chrome bright rainbow. It was a good ‘bow
for French Meadows and I was pleased.
With the rainbow released I quickly got
the spoon back into the water expecting
more action.
Save for a couple short strikes, I had no
more action for the next 4 hours. I tried
everything in my gear kit that usually
works at French Meadows without results.
I was actually on my way back to the
ramp when I marked some nice arches on
the Lowrance holding right on the bottom.
I grabbed a black Mag Lip 2.5, started
peddling at 2 mph and spooled the lure
out until it was occasionally ticking the
bottom.
Five minutes later I hooked up. I
suspected that the fish was a brown based
on the bulldog battle it put up, but it was
no match for my Vance’s trolling rod.
When the fish boiled to the top I was
pumped to see that it was a 17 inch brown.
What a way to end the day!
While my first trip of 2019 to French
Meadows wasn’t super productive, I did
catch a couple dandy trout and I’m itching
to hit the lake again very soon. I have a
feeling the bite is going to be very good
once the water climbs into the 50’s.
High Country Trout Adventure To
French Meadows Reservoir
French Meadows is one of my favorite
local trout lakes and I try to hit it several
times per year.
Since French Meadows is situated near
the Sierra summit, the lake was late to
open this spring after the intense winter
of 2018/19 and I wasn’t able to make it in
to the lake until May 30. I was expecting
big results and while I definitely had some
excitement I think the best spring action is
yet to come.
Lucy and I arrived a few minutes after
sunrise on the 30th and after about 20
minutes of rigging time, I dropped the
big Hobie Pro Angler into the water at the
south launch ramp.
I don’t think I’ve ever seen the lake
higher and I noticed right away that were
