night up in the North Channel where he
caught five catfish on beef leftovers and
chicken livers, although (if you believe
him… and I do), one escaped the stringer
before morning. Still with three fish in the
5 to 6 pound range it’s a pretty good haul!
Bryce from Gilroy was surprised to bring
in a big 5.5 pound cat while trout fishing
from the shore with PowerBait. Sara and
Victoria joined the catfish club fishing a
worm down by the dam while Ted Jones
from Santa Cruz landed a 6 lb. fish trolling
deep in the middle of the lake. Grant and
Hannah both caught a few bluegill and
redear, which have been hammering
redworms anywhere there are big shady
rocks.
Dave Delgado was excited to land a five
pound rainbow trout. His daughter Jade
and Chris Guevera brought up a pair on
rainbow Powerbait in the late evening
along with several other fish earlier in the
week.
Then we have Dave’s Nephew, “Bro-
Bro” fishing with his grandpa, Rick Chapa,
who landed another couple dinner-sized
trout using PowerBait right out of their
boat slip on the marnia.
Lily and Dwayne from Yuba City hooked
up a green light for some night fishing
and had the crappie and redear swarming
around their worms. Night fishing is a
whole lot of fun this time of year, you’ll find
catfish trolling the bottom and a fishing
light can bring in panfish from all around.
Finally, Kathie Fletcher caught a 6.5
lb. trout using PowerBait on a wedding
ring (the spinner, not the nuptial band of
precious metal).

fish as the water temperature warms up.
Ed Dillard of Dillard’s Guided Fishing
reported solid fishing at Lake Davis lately.
“We’ve been caching 10 to 20 fish a day,
a mixture of planters and some holdover
fish,” said Dillard.. “Baby Simon lures
have been producing the top action. The
surface water is warming up; it was 72
degrees yesterday afternoon.”
“Trolling at 25 to 30 feet deep is
producing the top fishing at Lake Davis,”
said Jeanne Graham at J&J Grizzly Store
and Camping Resort. “Anglers out in
three boats today found good rainbow
action while trolling with Baby Simons in
moon jelly colors. Fishermen are hooking
rainbows 18 inches and up..”
“Anglers with good casting arms are
catching big rainbows, but you have to
get your bait way the heck out there,”
said Graham “PowerBait and worms are
producing the top action.”
Big fish honors to go to young Ella, who
landed a 27 inch rainbow while soaking
bait at Mallard.

“Boaters and bank anglers are catching
and releasing largemouth bass at Eagle
Point and the cove at the corner of the
Lightning Tree boat ramp. Fish averaging
1-1/2 to 2 pounds and going up to 5
pounds are hitting soft plastics and frogs,”
stated Graham. “The top spots are Eagle
Point and the cove of the Lighting Tree
ramp.”
Brown bullhead catfish are hitting just
about anything, including trolled lures.
Shore anglers are nailing fish in the 1 to
1-1/2 lb. range at Camp Five and Mallard.

of water, 82 percent of capacity and 103
percent of average.

spawn, so anglers are seeing a lot of shad
activity in the early morning. “And where
you find shad, you’ll likely to find striped
bass,” advised Captain Jacob at the
Rocky Mountain Recreation Company.
The striped bass fishing is finally coming
back to life as the water temperatures
heat up. Anglers can expect to see striper
boils all over the lake in the coming
weeks. For now, the main way to hook
into them is using anchovies or sardines.
The catfish are also on the bite. “They
are biting mostly on mackerel or chicken
livers.,” said Captain Jacob. “Look for the
catfish around fallen trees in the water.
Stink baits have been working well for
these fish that rely on smell to sense
food. If you are fishing from shore, we
recommend either the east or west beach
areas. Some larger fish have been caught
along the dog run trail.”
Largemouth and smallmouth bass are
hitting nightcrawlers or an array of soft
plastics. Try fishing rocky points and trees
in the water. Badger Cove or the south
end of the lake are productive spots to
target.
The sunfish bite has shifted into high
gear as the water temperature rises.
Captain Jacob recommends casting some
red worms or mini-crawlers. You can find
the bluegill and crappie around the weed
mats near the shores or near the cattails,
as they are using these structures for
spawning.
Trout can be caught either using
corn yellow PowerBait or spring green
PowerBait at the Hetch Hetchy group
campsite.
