12 FRESHWATER Aug 2 - 16, 2019 FRESHWATER REPORTS: CONTINUED FROM PG 11 KLAMATH/TRINITY RIVERS Spring Chinook Fishing Perks Up SACRAMENTO – Fishing for spring Chinook salmon on the Klamath River has improved after a slow couple of weeks since the July 1 opener. “We had a tough day on our first day of fishing on the Klamath, but other anglers did well,” said Jerry Lampkin of TNG Motor Sports Guide Service. ”We saw 25 to 30 salmon landed in just the section of river were fishing.” On the following day the three anglers aboard his boat did much better. “Each of us landed a fish, including two adult Chinooks in the 8 to 9 lb. range and one small jack,” said Craig Newton of Willfish Bait and Tackle in Auburn. “We also lost a couple of larger fish.” Boaters are experiencing the top action in the estuary and at the mouth while trolling with Kastmasters and green/ gold spinners. Many of the fish are jacks, with the larger Chinooks going 10 to 12 pounds, noted Lampkin. The spring Chinook Salmon fishery will be open through Aug. 14 on the lower Klamath River (downstream of the Highway 96 bridge at Weitchpec) and from July 1 through Aug. 31 on the Trinity River (upstream of the confluence of the South Fork). The daily bag limit has been set at one Chinook Salmon (no size restrictions), and the possession limit is set at two Chinook Salmon. The fall Chinook fishery will open Aug. 15 in the Klamath River and Sept. 1 in the Trinity River. The basin in-river quota is 7,637 adult Chinook Salmon for 2019. Regulations will remain the same as in 2018 with a two-fish daily bag limit, with no more than one fish over 22 inches (such as one adult and one jack). The possession limit remains the same at six fish, with no more than three fish over 22 inches (effectively three daily bag limits). and the majority of teams weighed in a 3-kokanee limit.
