ISLETON – The salmon fishing was
tough for anglers fishing the Sacramento
out of Vieira’s Resort in Isleton during the
opening week of salmon season. “Only
about a dozen boats went out and none
reported catching salmon,” said Chesney
Wilson at Vieira’s Resort.
Reasons given by fishermen for the
tough fishing include the full moon, hot
weather, the higher flows this summer that
allowed the fish to move quickly up the
system, and the fact that most salmon are
still out in the ocean.
A better bet now is targeting largemouth
bass or striped bass. Jason Cordiale of JC
Guide Service reported solid black bass
fishing on his latest trip on the Delta.
“Vaughn and Larry fished the Mid-Delta
with me,” said Cordiale. “Despite high
winds, we caught and released about 10
fish in the 2 to 3 pound range while fishing
with frogs and swim jigs. We also had
some giant fish misses. “
Few anglers have been out striped
bass fishing on the Delta lately, but
experienced anglers are hooking up some
keepers while trolling or bait fishing on the
Sacramento and San Joaquin rivers.
Clyde Wands, a shallow water trolling
expert, reported catching and releasing
stripers to 15 pounds on his latest trip in
Aureilo Alvarado caught this husky rainbow trout at Los Vaqueros Reservoir on June 11. The
big fish grabbed PowerBait in South Cove.

the West Delta near the Antioch Bridge.
He ended up keeping a limit of stripers to
6 pounds while trolling both shallow and
deep water lures.
Wands hooked the majority of striped
bass while trolling with YoZuri Crystal
Minnows, but he allso fooled one fish with
a shallow-running Rat-L-Trap.

COLFAX - “Rollins
Lake is basically full,
but not many people
are fishing,” said
Jason Pleece. “Most
folks are swimming
and skiing. I’ve
been to the lake
twice recently and
I caught plenty of
bass on both trips, but nothing huge.”
“Overall I haven’t been using crankbaits
much, although they are working. Mostly
I have been working the surface with
Yo-Zuri Banana Boat walking baits simply
because topwater fishing is so exciting.
The bass I’ve been catching are a mix of
spots and smallmouths that run 10 to 13
inches in most cases. I’ve been getting a
dozen or more fish on every kayak fishing
trip I take. I think I could get even more if
I were using soft plastics, but you’ve got
to get that topwater action when you can,”
Pleece exclaimed.
“I haven’t heard of anyone catching
trout at either Scotts or Rollins, but catfish
are biting. At Scotts, the catfish action has
been good in the evening on crawlers and
liver fished near the dam,” said Pleece.
“I took a trip up to Scotts Flat last week
and got into some pretty good topwater
action on smallmouths suspended out in
open water, but overall the action is better
at Rollins. The bite took place right at first
light and didn’t last too long,” concluded
Pleece.

Catfish on Munch in Coves
EL SOBRANTE – It’s catfish time at San
Pablo Reservoir as the trout fishing slows
down.
“Trout season has come to an end and
we have not seen any trout being caught
this week,” reported Marcella Shoemaker
of the Rocky Mountain Recreation
Company. “Catfish are biting chicken liver,
anchovies and worms in various places.”
Jose Skunkoroni, AKA “The Skunk,” of
San Mateo didn’t get skunked on his latest
trip to San Pablo. Instead, he caught a 1.5
lb. catfish using PowerBait at Gazebo 1.
Ian Blazer of Oakland landed 3 catfish,
including two 1.5 pounders and one 2
pounder, in Graveyard Cove.
Finally, Justin of El Cerrito caught two 2
lb. catfish at the boat launch while using
anchovies.
The lake is 306.75 feet in elevation and
the surface water temperature is 69.7
degrees.

SACRAMENTO – The mouth of the
American River at Discovery Park, a hot
spot for salmon on last years’ salmon
opener, produced few fish this year,
despite the armada of boats that got on
the river in the early hours of the morning
of July 16.
“I don’t think more than 3 fish were
caught on opening day at Discovery
Park,” said Dennis Pfanner of Sacramento
Pro Tackle. “Historically, the bulk of the
American River fall run Chinooks don’t
move into the Sacramento area until after
September 25. Then the fishing really gets
going on the Sacramento and the lower
American usually around October 7.”
However, the exact timing of the run
varies on river flows, water temperatures
and the arrival of fall storms.
Boaters trolled on the opener with an
array of plugs and spinners, while some
shore anglers tossed out spinners, but
only a lucky few landed any salmon.
A better bet now is to target stripers
and catfish in the Sacramento area.
“Some stripers ranging from 18 pounds
to the low twenties have been caught by
anglers fishing pileworms, anchovies and
other baits in the Sacramento River in
the metropolitan region,” said Uncle Larry
Barnes, also at Sacramento Pro Tackle.
For catfish, anglers should head to
Lisbon Slough or Sutter Bypass. Anglers
can hook catfish in the 1 to 4 pound
range, along with some bigger fish, while
soaking mackerel, anchovies and chicken
liver both day and night.

Target Largemouths and
Crappie at Calero
COYOTE – Calero is the top spot for
anglers to pursue largemouth bass and
crappie, while Anderson Reservoir will
close to fishing and boating on August 19.
*Due to low water levels, Anderson Lake
will be closed to all boating, including
power boats, kayaks and float tubes
starting August 19th, 2019,” according
to the announcement from Santa Clara
County Parks.
Boaters are catching and releasing
largemouth bass averaging 1 to 1-1/2
pounds, along with some fish in the 2 to 3
lb. range, while using plastic worms, drop
shot rigs and spinnerbaits, reported Joe
Juane at Coyote Bait and Tackle.
