26 SALTWATER Aug 2 - 16, 2019 VOL.38 • ISS. 17 SALTWATER REPORTS: MONTEREY BAY Monterey Coast Anglers Battle Salmon, Rockfish and Lingcod MOSS LANDING – The Kahuna has been both targeting salmon on Monterey Bay and rockfish and lingcod on trips to Point Sur with good success. “A great group of 8 anglers today landed 10 king salmon to 20 pounds,” reported Carol Jones of Kahuna Sportfishing on their latest mooching adventure on July 18. “They had plenty of action for easy limits but lost quite a few fish and many light biters.” The previous salmon trip on the Kahuna yielded 10 salmon to 18 pounds for 22 anglers, according to Jones. On Saturday, July 20, the Kahuna targeted rockfish and lingcod off Point Sur. The 19 anglers landed 38 copper rockfish, 10 lingcod, 98 rockfish and 54 vermilion rockfish. Anglers used an array of bars, jigs and shrimp flies baited with squid strips. T Boats out of Chris’ Fishing Trips are also both targeting salmon and rockfish. The 22 anglers on the Checkmate landed limits of rockfish and 3 lingcod on July 20. The 15 anglers on the Checkmate bagged 16 salmon the previous day. “The salmon are still on the bite in the middle of the canyon and down near Mulligan Hill,” reported Todd Fraser of Bayside Marine on July 20. “There were some early limits caught trolling at Mulligan Hill 30-100 feet down. There were also some good scores of big fish caught in the middle of the canyon.” “There were a few bluefin seen jumping in the canyon. The halibut fishing was good near Capitola. The rockfish action was great near Davenport. The water was flat calm at Davenport at noon! The bay is full of anchovies and the big fish are here,” he concluded. - Dan Bacher This huge king was part of a 25-limit day aboard the New Easy Rider on July 4.
