They are spectacularly colored , fight hard and jump when hooked , and taste delicious . e had really nice weather over the last week with a few partly cloudy days , but other than that it has been really nice . Highs in the low to mid 80 ’ s and lows in the 60 ’ s . I think we might have had some sprinkles of rain a couple nights ago but nothing major ,” disclosed Jerry Chapman of JC Sportfishing in Cabo San Lucas .
“ Billfish fishing is so up and down its really hard to say how it will be this upcoming week , but we are hopeful as we have great weather . From the Light House to Ranch Migrino has been good for marlin and we are using live bait and lures about 2 miles off the beach . What is good about this is we don ’ t have to run far to get into the striped marlin if they ’ re hitting . This week whatever we are catching whether it is marlin , wahoo or dorado we are really working for them , well so what , we live and work in a great area and that ’ s fishing anyway ,” said Chapman .
“ If you run 12 to 14 miles off shore you have a chance to run into a school of tuna . The tuna are hanging at the Doughnut area and are being landed using cedar plugs and King Busters . Many big tuna caught off shore over
They are abundant in Baja and because they are a fast-growing , short-lived fish they are hungry more often than not . They die of old age around 5-6 years and attain a maximum weight of around 90lbs .
In terms of offerings most dorado are caught on trolling lures such as rubber skirts meant for marlin or sailfish or feathers meant for Tuna . They also hit trolled plugs such as Rapalas .
If dorado are concentrated in an area , either through chumming or because there is a piece of floating debris , a wide variety of lures may be cast to them . A favorite is a popper , which they will readily eat . If they are fired up they will pretty much eat anything .
Dorado mostly eat fish so traditional baitfish such as sardines and Pacific Mackerel work well . Larger fish will eat larger baits . Dorado have relatively small mouths but it always amazing how they can somehow still engulf relatively large baits .
the last week and we did really good with our boats landing tuna weighing 233lb , 200lb and 100lb . Some days we go out to find the schools and they aren ’ t around , so it has been hit or miss ,” Chapman declared .
