Mostly Salmon Limits on
Sacramento
REDDING - Limits have been the
rule most days for anglers fishing the
Sacramento River from Woodson Bridge
to Anderson. A mix of plugs and roe are
doing the damage.
“We had early limits most of the week.
We had one slow day right after the
rain when the water got a little muddy,
but new fish moved in the next day and
we were back to early limits,” reported
Captain Mike Bogue of Mike Bogue’s
Guide Service.
“I start the day off back trolling large
Flatfish and I haven’t had to switch over
to roe in a while. I’m running a standard
sardine wrapper. We keep the plugs
near the bottom and good things have
been happening,” quipped Bogue.
Robert Weese of Northern California
Guide Service is putting his clients on
limits and early limits too. As of press
time Robert was fishing near Ball’s
Ferry. He was fishing a mix of plugs and
roe, but confided that on many days
his anglers were scoring limits on plugs
before roe could be used.
“We’ve been getting some jacks here
and there, but most of our fish are
running 15 to 25 pounds,” said Weese.
Both Weese and Bogue are available
and will put you on some impressive
kings if you’ve got the itch to battle a big
bad chinook. To book a trip with Weese

Fred Nakagawa of Lodi won first
place by catching a chinook weighing
17 pounds, 12 ounces, while trolling a
Silvertron spinner on the South Fork
near Sycamore Slough, according
to Jim Fernandez, president of the
organization.
Ted Handle placed second with a king
going 17 pounds, 8 ounces. He landed
his fish while trolling with a Silvertron
spinner on the Sacramento near Ko-Ket
Resort.
Ed Alvarez finished third with a king
weighing 16 pounds, 7 ounces. He
was trolling a Silverton spinner on the
South Fork between Hog and Sycamore
sloughs.
Anglers caught the majority of the fish
in the Mokelumne River system, but
also bagged salmon on the Sacramento
River between Ko-Ket Resort and
Walnut Grove.
“The fishing improved substantially
over the last two weeks after EBMUD
began releasing pulse flows from
Camanche Dam,” said Fernandez.

The bag limit for fall-run Chinook
Salmon on the Mokelumne River is
two fish, and the possession limit is
four fish, according to the 2018-2019
Freshwater Sport Fishing Regulations.
The bag limit for fall-run Chinook
Salmon on the American, Feather and
Sacramento rivers is one fish, and the
possession limit is two fish.
The good showing of fish follows a
record salmon run last year. A total of
19,904 fall Chinook salmon went over
Woodbridge Dam in the fall of 2017,
according to William Smith, manager
of the CDFW’s Mokelumne River Fish
Hatchery. The past two years also
saw record steelhead runs on the
Mokelumne.
Striped bass fishing never shut down
all summer – and the solid fishing is
continuing into the fall. Boaters are
hooking keeper and undersized stripers
while trolling with Yo-Zuri and P-Line
Predator lures on the San Joaquin from
Franks Tract to Santa Clara Shoals,
reported Jeremy Grimes. Bait fishing
with shad, anchovies, pileworms and
bloodworms is also productive.

Anglers Dream of Trout
Plants…
COLFAX - “Another month has passed
with zero trout planted at Rollins or
Scotts Flat Reservoirs,” exclaimed
Jason Pleece of Meadow Vista. “I know
that the DFW has a lot of challenges
that keep them from planting fish like
they have in the past, but I wish they

would toss us a bone and dump a few
rainbows into Rollins and Scotts Flat.
Without planter rainbows, there isn’t
much for the average guy to catch.”
“I hit both lakes last week and ended
up catching good numbers of bass at
both lakes while fishing from my kayak.
At Scotts, 4 inch motor oil colored
Senkos were the ticket for smallmouths
and largemouths. My big fish was a 2.77
pound smallmouth,” reported Pleece.
“At Rollins, I caught bass on Senkos,
2 inch grubs and Yo-Zuri deep running
crankbaits. Most of the fish I caught at
Rollins were 1 pound spotted bass, but
I did pick up an 11 inch crappie on a
crankbait,” said Pleece.
“The water temperature is still too high
at Scotts and Rollins to start targeting
browns, but it won’t be long. I just hope
that the DFW tosses some rainbows
into these lakes this fall. I’d like to
have some close to home rainbow trout
action,” Pleece concluded.

GUERNEVILLE – The Russian
River below the East Branch closed to
fishing on October 1, due to low flow
conditions. The flows must be 300 cfs
for the river to be open to fishing.
The low flow hotline is 707-944-
5533. The Laguna Santa Rosa and
Santa Rosa Creek, along with all other
streams in Sonoma and Marin counties,
are also closed to fishing.
Before the closure, the smallmouth
bass fishing had really picked up on
the river, according to King’s Sport
& Tackle.. Water temperatures were
cooling into the sixties with flows still in
the 100 cfs range around Guerneville.
When the river reopens, “Keep an eye
out for salmon as they are entering the
system as well. Russian River salmon
are a no target, no keep fish, so any
incidental hook ups must be released
immediately,” according to King’s.
