to 30 pounds. Mike is ready to deploy
roe is he has to, but he’s been getting
limits nearly every day on T-55 and T- 60
Flatfish.
While salmon are the focus on the
Sacramento, the trout action has been
outstanding for anglers working crickets,
egg imitations and nymphs. The wild
rainbows range from 12 to 20 inches.
If you want to fish the Sacramento River,
both Robert Weese and Mike Bogue are
top sticks when it comes to putting anglers
on big bad kings and wild ‘bows. To book
a trip with Weese of Northern California

ROLLINS
Bass Bite Fair, Trout Few and
Far Between…
COLFAX - “It’s been pretty decent if
you’re a bass guy, but pretty slow if you’re
a trout fisherman, although I did pick up a
17 inch brown trout this week on a Yo-Zuri
bluegill pattern crankbait,” reported Jason
Pleece of Meadow Vista.
“I caught the brown on the first cast
of the morning near the docks in Long
Ravine. Even though I caught that brown,
I think it is too early for brown trout fishing
overall. The water temperature needs to
get into the 50’s for the brown action to
really get going,” said Pleece.
“Another two weeks have passed
without a trout plant at Rollins Lake or
Scotts Flat. In fact, I looked at the DFW
fish planting website and there were no
recent or upcoming plants slated for either
Placer or Nevada Counties. I hope we
can get at least one plant at Rollins and
one at Scotts. Those rainbows add a lot
of excitement for anglers in our area,”
Pleece asserted.
“While there aren’t many trout available
at Rollins right now, I’ve noticed an
upswing in the bass action. The topwater
fishing has been very slow. Early and late
you can get a few on crankbaits. Ned rigs
are head and shoulders the best offering
right now. I’m working down the banks
starting at 15 feet and working to as deep
as 40 and I’m getting spots at all depths.
About a third of the fish are smallmouths.
The smallmouths are holding shallower
overall. I think two dozen fish per day
would be pretty realistic if you fished hard.
The average bass is running about a
pound, but I’ve been getting a few over 2

pounds on every trip,” Pleece related.
“When the water does cool down I’ll be
targeting browns at Rollins and Scotts like
I do every year. The brown trout fishing
is pretty consistent during the winter. I’ve
got browns over 5 out of Rollins and my
personal best at Scotts went 7.42 pounds.
When browns are the target I like to start
the day speed trolling with 3 to 6 inch
shallow running minnow plugs. If the plugs
don’t produce I run push up the river arm
until I find a temperature break. At that
point, I break out the slip bobbers and
drift pinned worms 10 to 15 feet deep.
The biggest brown I’ve caught at Rollins
hit a worm under a bobber and I’ve spend
hundreds of hours there trolling,” said
Pleece.

SONOMA –
While the steelhead
fishing is closed
on the Russian River because of low
water conditions, you can still fish for
landlocked steelhead at Lake Sonoma.
“We had a guided trip at Lake
Sonoma with 2 of my local clients
who wanted to try for the landlocked
steelhead trout,” said Rich Crispi of
TW Guide Service. “This was my
first trip there this year and I was not
disappointed. We hooked up in the
first 10 minutes and picked up about 5
steelies in about 3 hour. Then it died.”
“We caught them on Speedy Shiners
between 45 and 65 feet deep,” said
Crispi. “Back and white was the hot
ticket. Then we slowed it down when
we narrowed it down to one area and
got another five steelhead to go.”
“We picked them up with Rocky
Mountain tackle hyper plaid dodgers
with all different color Apex lures behind
them, averaging about 1.8 miles an
hour at the same depths.,” he tipped.
“We ended up with 10 for the day. The
biggest was 21 inches at 2-1/2 pounds;
we had three over 18 inches for the
day. All of the fish except one was
released.”
“The lake is fishing well. We should
see be good fishing until the first heavy
rains. Then those fish high tail up the
creeks,” Crispi added.
The Russian River below the East
Branch closed to fishing on October 1,
due to low flow conditions. The flows
must be 300 cfs. for the river to be
open to fishing. The low flow hotline is
707-944-5533.

Fish Lake Tahoe!
SACRAMENTO – The salmon
fishing continues to be productive in the
Sacramento River in the metropolitan
region, with many anglers reporting their
one fish limits of Chinooks. The late fall
Chinook salmon are starting to show in
the catches now.
“Yesterday the four anglers in my boat
caught four salmon ranging from 6 to 22
pounds,” said James Netzel of Tight Lines
Guide Service. “We were trolling Brad’s
Cut Plugs and Pro Troll flashers in the
Garcia Bend area. Two of the fish were
late fall Chinooks.”
“Today we landed two jacks and lost
five other fish,” said Netzel. “We used the
same lures as the day before.”
Netzel plans fishing through the closing
day of the salmon season on December
16, water conditions permitting.
Anglers continue to land striped bass
while trolling Yo-Zuri Pins Minnows and
jigging Blade Runner spoons in the
Port of Sacramento and the Deepwater
Channel, reported Uncle Larry Barnes of
Sacramento Pro Tackle.

SAN PABLO RESERVOIR
Family Fishing Day Produces
Many Trout
EL SOBRANTE – Mount Lassen
planted 1,000 lbs. of rainbow trout on
October 19 in the net for Family Fishing
Day at San Pablo Reservoir. “The day
was a lot of fun and a lot of trout were
caught, but only a few people came up for
pictures.,” said Marcella Shoemaker of the
Rocky Mountain Recreation Company.
Big fish honors go to Brianna Gutierrez
of San Lorenzo , who caught 3 trout,
topped by a 4 pounder, on Family Fishing
Day, October 20. Dylan and Jacob
Kelpass of San Pablo caught 4 trout, with
the largest weighing 3 lbs., on the same
day.
Keith Kelpass and Yavanna Anderson
Chiancone from San Pablo teamed up to
land 6 rainbows during a recent trip to the
reservoir.
The bass bite continues to be very good.
Anglers are picking up both spotted and
largemouth bass while fishing Senkos,
jigs, crankbaits, drop shot rigs and other
offerings at San Pablo.
The surface temperature is 69.5
degrees and the lake level is 291.5 feet in
elevation.
San Pablo Recreation Area is open daily
the month of October from 6:30am – 6:00
p.m. Boats have to be off the water at 5:00
p.m. The café is closed for the season,
