Chesbro Crappie Bite Turns
On
COYOTE – If you want to hook crappie
near San Jose, Chesbro Reservoir offers
the top chance at success now.
“Boaters are hooking the crappie while
using crappie jigs and redworms at 20
to 25 feet deep,” said Gavin Cohen at
Coyote Bait and Tackle. “Shore anglers
are also picking up the slabsides to the
left of the boat ramp and off the dam. The
crappie range from ½ to 1-1/2 pounds.”
Anglers are also bagging some
smaller bass in the 1 to 1-1/2 lb. range
while throwing 3/8 oz. spinnerbaits with
chartreuse on them.
Chesbro and Uvas reservoirs offer the
best largemouth fishing. Largemouths
averaging 2 to 3 pounds and going up to
8 pounds are grabbing jigs, Senkos and
stickbaits, noted Cohen.
“Both lakes are producing catfish
averaging 4 to 10 pounds for fishermen
tossing out mackerel and anchovies,” he
tipped. “Larger fish to 18 pounds have
been reported lately.”
Coyote bass fishing is mediocre now,
but crappie are hitting red worms or
1/32 and 1/16 oz. jigs in pink/black and
Shasta Slowly Transitions into Fall
Pattern
BRIDGE BAY - The fall transition has begun at
Shasta, but mild weather is making the switch slow
and prolonged. As a result, the trout are scattered and
the bass remain moderately deep much of the day.
While the trout are scattered, limits are still the rule
on rainbows that run 12 to 22 inches. Browns have
been hard to find as they push up the river arms in
preparation for spawning. For rainbows, standard
shad imitations such as Kastmasters, Speedy
Shiners, Cripplures and Wiggle Hoochies are all great
choices.
The key to success is to stay on the move probing
different levels of the water column. There are
rainbows right beneath the surface and down as deep
as 50 feet. The main body and lower ends of the arms
have been the best general areas for trouters.
Bass anglers can score big numbers of spotted
bass to 2 pounds while working vertically with drop
shot rigs and spoons. There has been some reaction
action early and late in the day, but overall the vertical
stuff has been working better.
As of press time, Shasta was 92 feet from maximum
pool and dropping about 4 inches per day. Boaters
are advised to use caution as rocks and other

Big Macks Go on Bite!
SOUTH LAKE TAHOE- “I had a great trip to Tahoe a month
ago, so I decided to give it another shot this week before the
early winter snow starts falling,” reported Tim Brooks of Citrus
Heights. “I had planned on doing some speed trolling with big
minnow plugs, but we started off with Gulp! Minnows teamed
with Sling Blades and never changed because that rig was
