YREKA— The crazy weather in the Mt Shasta / Yreka area has made for difficult fishing conditions, mostly due to high water flows, wind and snow, reported Scott Caldwell of SC Guide Service.

BRENTWOOD— Trout fishing is going strong at Los Vaqueros Reservoir. Catfish angling was productive last week, while striper fishing remains slow. The water clarity has improved to good and the water temperature remains at 64 degrees.
The reservoir is storing nearly 150,000 acre-feet of water, 94 percent of its 160,000 acre-foot capacity. This is the most water ever stored at Los Vaqueros. Pumping is underway and will continue through May.
The month-long Los Vaqueros Trout Derby concluded on Sunday, April 30, also Family Fishing Day at the Marina.
“ After being steady the last two weeks, the standings were turned upside down this past week,” reported Brian Demmunik at the Los Vaqueros Marina.“ Gary Wong placed first with a 7.59 pound catch caught on a lure in the South Cove.”
Paul Vigil placed second with 6.95 pounds, while Kevin Sandoval placed third with 6.64 pounds.
“ We stocked 2,000 pounds of trout on April 20, our largest single plant this year,” said Demmunik.“ So far, we’ ve planted 11,500 pounds of trout in the reservoir this season.”
The trout are being caught in South Cove and Oak Point as well as Peninsula Cove. The baits of choice for shore anglers are garlicscented PowerBait, nightcrawlers or Kastmaster lures.
Rental boaters are also hooking trout in Cox and Peninsula coves. Trolling has picked up for anglers employing Rapalas in Fire Tiger, trout and silver patterns.
Striper fishing remains slow, with shakers providing the main action..

Stripers Fall Prey To Trollers
VALLEY SPRINGS—“ Pretty good” striped bass action is available at New Hogan Reservoir now, reported Monte Smith at Gold Country Sportfishing.
“ On my last trip, the two anglers fishing with me landed 11 stripers,” said Smith.“ The fish ranged from 18 to 24 inches long.”
Smith trolled“ rolled” shad and anchovies at 16 to 30 feet deep both upriver in the Calaveras River inlet and in the main lake.“ The fish are scattered,” Smith added.
On previous trips, anglers fishing with Smith have landed stripers up to 6-1 / 2 pounds while trolling shad and anchovies.

Crappie and Bass On Spring Fling
ANGELS CAMP— Crappie fishing remains good at New Melones Reservoir, but anglers will only have a few more weeks to target the springtime crappie in shallow coves.
” Crappie jigs and live minnows have been the best bet,” said John Liechty of Glory Hole Sports.“ Use the color of the jig to attract fish and the action of the minnow to coax them into biting. Once the water temperature rises, they will move out to deeper water and suspend. During the summer months, they can be caught under a submersible light.”
Many anglers have been catching bass out of New Melones.“ The lake is beautiful at this level and there are fish to be caught on the main lake, in creek channels and upriver,” advised Liechty.“ The shoreline is covered with freshly flooded vegetation. It is very important to use a presentation that will pull through the grass without getting hung up.
“ A Texas Rig or a weedless drop-shot are both good choices. On the Texas Rig, try using a lizard or a brush hog. On the drop-shot a straight tail worm will work best.
