Eagle Lake is Filling and the Spalding ramp will be Open!

Eagle Lake north of Susanville has suffered more than any other lake from the lingering effects of a four year drought, but it is coming up extremely well this year. The popular boat ramp at Spalding has been closed for 3 years from lack of water. But, thanks to the tremendous amount of rain and snow this year, that boat ramp will be operational this year.

Pine Creek is the main inflow to the lake, and it traditionally only runs for several weeks a year before drying up. This year, the creek has been flowing strongly since January, and some folks think it may run into July this year! So far the lake is up over 5 feet from last year, and the Fish & Wildlife service thinks it will rise another 2 feet by summertime.
This is tremendous news for the ardent trout fishermen of Northern California. Eagle Lake has been the states premier trout fishery, and the Eagle Lake strain of rainbow trout are know far and wide for their size, fighting ability, and wonderful flavor. Eagle Lake RV Park is open for business, and will be offering boat slip rentals at Spalding again this year. They offer a full service park, including comfortable cabins, tent sites, full hook up RV sites, a fully stocked store, Free Wi-Fi, and more. Call early for reservations, especially if you want to reserve a boat slip. Call( 530) 825- 3133 or go to www. eaglelakeandrv. com.

SANTA CLARA VALLEY LAKES
Largemouths Are In Different Stages Of Spawn
COYOTE— An excellent spring season of fishing continues to provide bass and crappie for Silicon Valley anglers.
Largemouth bass were in different stages of the spawn from lake to lake this week, according to Mickey Clements at Coyote Bait and Tackle.
“ At Calero, a lot of the fish are either in spawn or post spawn mode, but the action is decent. There’ s been some good fish taken around Cherry Cove. Jigs, spinnerbaits and 4.5” swimbaits are all working.”
“ At Anderson, the water is still a little

Shaking tubes, baby brush hogs and wacky-rigging five-inch senkos are good bets. The water is still cold, around 58 degrees, and the fish there are in prespawn mode.”
“ Coyote is also in prespawn mode with temperature around 58 degrees.”
For crappie, Clements suggested both Uvas and Chesbro.
“ Uvas has been the best for crappie, but Calero is doing well also. Minnows and jigs under a bobber are getting some nice fish, but Uvas definitely has better action than Calero,” he tipped. by Roland Aspiras
SHASTA / WHISKEYTOWN LAKES
Bass & Trout Fishing Ramps Up
REDDING— Over the past two weeks fishing has really come alive for north state trout, salmon and bass anglers. In addition to the red-hot trout fishing in the Sacramento River( see the Redding report) trout, salmon and bass fishing is good to very good at Shasta and Whiskeytown.
“ We’ ve definitely been focused on the bass fishing at Lake Shasta because that’ s been the best bite going, but the trout trolling is now coming on strong. We are getting quality rainbows and some really nice size browns,” reported Kirk Portorcarrero of SacRiverGuide. Com.“ The bass are running anywhere from 12 inches to 3 pounds and it’ s been a mix of smallmouths and spots recently. Tubes and spinnerbaits are working the best for our clients.”
“ The trout action seems best in the main body. We are running standard shad pattern spoons and plugs from the surface to about 30 feet deep. Rainbows are definitely our target, but the browns just seem to randomly show up. When you hook one of those it’ s a nice surprise,” quipped Portocarrero.

As of press time, Lake Shasta was less then 3 feet from maximum pool.
At Whiskeytown, the kokanee bite isn’ t wide open, but it’ s very good with anglers landing limits if they work at it. What’ s really encouraging is the size of the fish. At this point, 12 to 14 inch salmon are the norm. By August kokanee in the 18 to 20 inch range may well be a reality.
Wedding Rings and Yakima Bait Tight Line hoochie spinners teamed with Sling Blade and Paulina Peak dodgers have been the best offerings. Pink and orange colors are both working.
SOUTHERN OREGON ROUNDUP
Spring Kings And Trout Lead Catches
ROSEBURG— Spring fishing is starting to heat up in southwestern Oregon with both spring salmon and trout on the menu according to the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife.
On the Lower Rogue, spring salmon fishing has been fair. Weather and water conditions this year are making the Rogue near perfect for bank anglers to catch spring Chinook. April is when we usually see good numbers of spring Chinook entering the river. The middle river dropped into reasonable shape last week, and winter steelhead and a few spring Chinook salmon were caught around Grants Pass. Plunking or fishing sideplaners has been effective for bank anglers, while sidedrifting bait or pulling plugs has been productive for boat anglers. The upper Rogue is high but
