Rooster Tail Spinners For
Both Bass And Trout!
R
ooster Tail spinners are
one of those “all around”
lures that will catch just about
anything from trout to black bass,
stripers and even panfish. While
they are best known as a tried and
true trout slayer they are a sleeper
bass catcher.
“Surprisingly the most impres-
sive fish I’ve caught on a Rooster
Tail wasn’t a trout. It was a 6 plus
pound smallmouth that I pulled
out of Lake Almanor years ago. I
still remember the incident like it
was yesterday. The fish absolutely
smashed a ¼ ounce yellow Roost-
er Tail right at dusk. I’ve literally
spent thousands of hours bass
fishing since then and I’ve never
caught a smallmouth close to the
size of that brute that just couldn’t
lay off a Rooster Tail,” relates Fish
Sniffer Editor Cal Kellogg..
“Targeting stream trout is
the quintessential trout fishing
experience. Spinners, spoons
and plugs will all take stream
trout, but over the years spinners
have hooked the most trout for
me. I’m very particular about the
type of spinner I use. Very often
my spinner of choice is a Roost-
er Tail,” relates Fish Sniffer
Editor Cal Kellogg.
“In terms of my Rooster Tail
selection I carry both 1/8 and
1/6 ounce models and maybe a
quarter ouncer or two for trout.
Brown and black models are my
favorites, but I’ve caught my
share of fish on white and yellow
models too,” Kellogg tipped.
“For bass the 1/6 ounce Roost-
er Tail works well, but it’s the ¼
ouncer that I really prefer. My fa-
vorite color remains yellow with
a silver blade, although I’ve had
success on frog patterns, brown
with a brass blade and black with
a chrome blade. In terms of bass
fishing I consider a Rooster Tail a
more stealthy version of a tradi-
tional bent arm spinnerbait. It’s a
much more compact offering that
works great when the bass are a bit
skittish or when the water is super
clear,” Kellogg continued.
