down to shorts and T-shirts with the temperature about 86 degrees and calm.
We fished a couple spots on the upper McCloud with no success, so we returned to the main body near Silverthorn. The water was very cloudy, but we did manage to catch a couple rainbows on Excel spoons trolled about 10 feet deep. We moved to several other spots, but never found a concentration of fish.
Back at the cabin at Tsasdi resort, we compared notes with our friends. Bruce and Al had done extremely well – they had landed a 3 3 / 4 pound brown, a 3 pound rainbow, and several other rainbows in the 2 pound range. I told them I was really sorry for them! They needed to do this on a derby day! Little did I know how right I was.
Saturday we were at the boats in the slips of the resort at 5:30. John and I headed to the gooseneck, and waited until the official start time of 6 am before trolling the face of our favorite rock wall.

Devil and Kastmaster toplining, and an Excel spoon and Speedy Shiner on the downriggers at 15 and 20 feet deep. We trolled the wall face a couple of times with no response, so we moved down to the mouth of O’ Brien Bay and trolled the open water south. By this time, the north wind was really starting to blow, and we decided to just keep heading downwind.
We managed a couple of 15-inch rainbows on the bloody cop car Excel at 20 feet, but that was it. By now there were 2 and 3-foot whitecaps in the main body, so we decided to try the Dry Fork area. It was much calmer in the protected bay, but here the wind was swirling all over the place! We managed 2 more mediocre rainbows on a medium size Holographic Tasmanian Devil trolled right on top at 2.5 mph.
The north wind continued all day, blowing down the main body and swirling petulantly in all the canyons and bays. We caught a total of 7 trout, and nothing to brag about.
Back at the weigh in, we had a measly 5.67 pounds for 4 trout. All our partners had done better than us, but not by much. The derby leader for the first day had 13 pounds! After the derby, we learned he had caught them at 20 feet deep in the McCloud arm on chartreuse Cripplures!
Sunday dawned clear and windy again. John and I headed directly to the dam to see if we could put in an hour or two before the wind really came up. We started fishing north of Centimudi boat ramp and trolled south with the wind. As it started to get light, we could see the water was very dirty.
Combined with the increasing waves flowing toward the dam, we decided to move to Dry Fork again. We managed a couple of 15-inch rainbows on Speedy Shiners at 15
feet deep, and then got a call from Mark. He was in the gooseneck and had just lost a nice brown behind the boat, as well as boxing a couple of rainbows. We decided that was as

latest trip, but the one angler and I caught and released around 30 fish,” reported John Loverin, fishing guide.“ The fish averaged 2 to 3 pounds. We launched out of the north end of the lake at Moccasin Point. The wind was really bad.”
“ We caught the fish on beds and shallow flats while using Senkos and shakey heads at 5 to 14 feet,” he noted.“ Our biggest fish was 5 pounds.”
“ On Saturday, the one anglers fishing with me and I in the Badgepackers Annual Bass Tournament caught and released around 40 fish,” he said.“ We caught them on just about every thing- on top water lures( Zara Spooks,) shakey heads, Senkos, drop shot rigs and swimbaits on beds and where fish were chasing bait. We fished the south end of the out of Fleming Meadows. The fish averaged 2 to 2-1 / 2 pounds; the largest was 3 pounds.”
Monte Smith of Gold Country Sportfishing reported solid trout fishing on his latest trolling venture on Don Pedro.
“ Returning clients always like a later start, so we left the dock at 8 a. m., caught two quick trout and a bass – and that was it for a couple of hours as the bite shut down. I was able to put my thinking cap on and we found a total of ten quality lures for them while using heavy spoons at 25 to 45 feet deep,” said Smith.
The lake is 81 percent of capacity and the Blue Oaks, Fleming Meadows and Moccasin Creek ramps are open.
