Experienced anglers fishing
nightcrawlers and spinners in the
North Fork and Middle Fork of the
American above the confluence
are picking up rainbows in the
10 to 18 inch range and an
occasional brown trout.
“The key is to fish deep holes
with soft edges where the trout
can rest,” he explained.
He noted that a lot of access
roads to the Auburn State
Recreation Area now are not
open, so anglers must be willing
to hike. Also, he recommended
that anglers be very careful when
fishing in the high, swift water
conditions.
“Nobody has reported bringing
any fish into the store lately,”
said Jerry at the Sly Park Resort.
“About six weeks ago, one
angler brought in a 3-1/4 lb.
mack measuring 24 inches, a 3
lb. brown measuring 22 inches
and a 2 lb. 10 oz. smallmouth
measuring 18 inches. He
caught all of the fish while using
nightcrawlers from shore.”

AMERICAN RIVER
Shad Converge At
Discovery Park
SACRAMENTO - American
shad are finally showing in good
numbers at the mouth of the
American River at Discovery Park,
but few anglers have reported
venturing upriver lately, since
many parkway parking lots are still
closed, due to flooding this year in
the lower river.
“A bunch of guys in boats are
getting shad at the mouth today,”
reported Uncle Larry Barnes of
Sacramento Pro Tackle. “They are
using 1/8 oz. green/fluorescent
head darts. Fish up to 2 pounds
are being reported.”
Boaters are launching at Miller
Park now. Bank anglers are also
catching shad while fishing darts

LAKE BERRYESSA
Bass Hitting In The
Shallows
NAPA - The bass fishing
has shifted into high gear with
the warming weather on Lake
Berryessa.
“My latest trip to Berryessa
produced 15 fish, mostly
smallmouths,” said Don Paganelli
of Paganelli’s Bass Fishing
Experience. “The largest fish was
in the 2-1/2 to 3 lb. class.”
“We fished green pumpkin
Senkos and tubes in the top ten
feet of water in the Narrows and
the main body,” said Paganelli.
“We also landed a 1 lb. crappie.
The water temperature was 65 to
68 degrees.”
Jose Rubio of Sweeney
Sports confirmed the top-notch
bass fishing found at Berryessa
now. “A lot of the bass are on
their spawning beds,” he stated.
“Anglers are doing best with drop
shot rigs and swimbaits.”
“The crappie fishing is still good
in the coves for anglers using
small jigs and live minnows,” he
noted. “For catfish, your best bet
is to fish cut bait in the mouth
of Putah Creek early and late in
the day. Fish up to 8 pounds are
showing.”
Fishing for rainbows is still slow.
“One local reported trolling at a
variety of depths and caught only
a couple of small trout at 30 feet
deep,” Rubio reported.
