you’re hoping for quick action, but
it wasn’t to be on the 25th. Our first
strike didn’t come for about 40 min-
utes, but when a fish ripped one of
Monte’s spoons off a starboard side
downrigger, we could tell right away
that it was a good one.
Dan fought the fish expertly and
despite some spirited runs and wild
jumps he put the first rainbow of
the day into the boat. It was a sleek
square tailed beauty that measured
about 22 inches long.
Buoyed by Dan’s fish we were
hoping for a flurry, but that didn’t
happen. Instead we fell back into the
pattern of trolling along quickly, pros-
pecting a maximum amount of terri-
tory. It was another 30 or 40 minutes
before another trout came knocking.
This one wasn’t as big as Dan’s, but
it was still a handsome holdover that
spit up a chrome bright shad minnow
when it hit the deck.
The pattern we established was
that there was no pattern, but there
were some quality trout up for grabs.
We’d troll anywhere from 20 minutes
to an hour between strikes and Dan,
Ben and Reed took turns fighting
fish.
By the time we called it a day
in the late afternoon, there were
8 handsome rainbows in the ice
chest and we’d only lost one fish.
We probably lost it because I was
trying to capture some underwater
video footage of it, but nobody was
complaining.
Dan’s 22 incher was the big fish
of the day, but Reed landed one in
the afternoon that was just a tiny bit
smaller.
It was a great trip that featured
decent fishing, lots of instruction
from Monte and lots of stories from
all of us. San Quentin Prison (Dan
worked there for years), fishing
gear of every description, Trump,
trout fishing, saltwater fishing, crazy
anglers, crazy people, crazy fishing
guides, legal marijuana, UFOs, big-
foot, guns, bigger guns, non-fiction
and fiction books and General Custer
were just some of the subjects we
covered….A fun day in the sun with
some engaging and knowledgeable
gentlemen to be sure.

As of press time the rainbow trout bite at Don Pedro Reservoir continues to heat up as this father
and son angling duo will certainly attest.

like to join Monte on the water, give him
a call at (209) 581-4734. You’ll catch
some fish and learn a lot about trout and
landlocked salmon fishing as Monte is one
of the premier trout and salmon trollers
in the state. He taught me a lot of what I
know about trout trolling, that’s for sure!
Costa Offers Glasses For
Fishing, Hunting & More!
I would have never
bought glasses with

(think light yellow) lens-
es. I buy dark glasses to
block the sun, why
buy glasses with
lenses that look to
be nearly clear with
only a light-yellow tint?
I’m so glad the rep at Costa sent me a pair
of sunrise silver mirror glasses. These are the
ultimate glasses for low light conditions. I
wear then when driving early and late in the
day. I even wear them after dark at times. You
know how annoying the headlights on other
cars can be during long drives after dark? With
these lenses, I can see perfectly well, but they
totally tame the harsh somewhat painful glare
of headlights.
These are also my go to shooting and hunt-
ing glasses. They enhance detail to an incred-
ible degree. They help me spot more game
at prime dawn and dusk periods and
they make me a better shot at these
times too.
Finally, have you ever been on a
boat and you are still squinting your
eyes despite the fact that the sky is
overcast and the sun isn’t visible.
That’s a great time to break out the
