SANTA CLARA VALLEY LAKES
Target Largemouths At Anderson, Calero
COYOTE- Bass and crappie fishing remained excellent through out the region with angling interest high in response to the Santa Clara Valley reservoirs.
Both Anderson and Calero were top bets for anglers seeking out bass, according to Mickey Clements at Coyote Bait and Tackle.
“ Whether you toss a jig, drop shot, or reaction, you will find fish at different stages of the spawn. That’ s the nice thing about this time of year,” he related.
“ At Anderson the water is colder with fish just now hitting the spawn. Calero is in spawn to post spawn.”
For crappie, Uvas and Chesbro were Clement’ s recommendations.“ Jigs and minnows are working at both lakes. Again, this time of year you can find crappie up shallow at almost all of the lakes. Calero is also a good bet at the boat launch cove,” he tipped.-by Roland Aspiras
SCOTTS FLAT LAKE
Bass Bite Hits Spring Stride, Trout Play Hard To Get
NEVADA CITY-“ I can’ t seem to find any trout at Scotts Flat, but I’ ve been hooking quite a few smallmouth and largemouth bass now that the spawn in underway,” related Fish Sniffer reader Alton Biggs.
“ This April I went up to Scotts twice to troll for browns with Rapalas. I didn’ t get any trout, but I caught some nice smallmouth bass up to about 4 pounds. Since then I’ ve been focusing on bass exclusively and I’ ve been doing well,” said Biggs.
“ Some mornings Rapala Husky Jerks worked aggressively off rocky areas work well. Overall jigs have been working better. I’ m using a Yamamoto spider grub rigged on a 1 / 8 ounce darter head and just dragging it down the banks. I’ ve been putting lots of crawfish scent Pro-Cure Super Gel on the jigs. Most of the bass are in the 1 to 2 pound class, but my top fish was just over 5 pounds. Most of the bass are smallmouths, but there are some northern strain largemouths mixed in,” asserted Biggs.
SHASTA / WHISKEYTOWN LAKES
Shasta Slow, Whiskeytown Hot!
REDDING-“ I spent the last three days fishing for trout at Lake Shasta with John Brassfield from Trucksmart and the fishing was very difficult,” reported Fish Sniffer Publisher Paul Kneeland.“ On the three days, we ended up landing around 20 rainbows and they were all under 2 pounds. The fish were widely scattered and holding from the surface to 20 feet deep.”
“ We caught fish on Speedy Shiners and Excels. We heard of some folks catching some good browns up in the McCloud Arm on white Wiggle Hoochies. The rainbows we caught were pretty skinny for some reason. We had a couple around 19 inches long that didn’ t break 2 pounds. At times were had to endure big winds. It was blowing so hard at times that it was pushing my big Rogue Jet around,” said Kneeland.
Bass fishing at Shasta is a lot more consistent than the trout fishing. You can find bass throughout the main body and lower arms holding on large points. 10 to 30 feet deep is

the best depth range for targeting spotted bass in the 1 to 3 pound class. Soft plastics such as Mother’ s Finest Worms and Senkos work best, but crankbaits and spinnerbaits are producing too.
Shasta is currently 6 feet from maximum pool.
Captain Les of Fish On Charters has been enjoying limit style kokanee action at Whiskeytown Reservoir. Most of the fish his clients are boating run between 14 and 15 inches. Hoochies teamed with Shasta Tackle Sling Blades have been the top-performing combo for Les.
SOUTH FORK RESERVOIR
Trout Move Into Deeper Water
EL SOBRANTE- The surface water temperatures have climbed into the mid fifties at South Fork Reservoir, and with the sunny days of this week, the fish have moved away from shore during the day so anglers need to change their tactics, reported Joe Doucette of the Nevada Department of Wildlife.
Anglers do continue to catch some fish along Jet Ski Beach, but coves further north such as Tomera, the boat ramp cove and those closer to the dam are probably the best bets for trout anglers.
“ The trout being caught are averaging between 14 and 18 inches with an occasional

20 inch fish being caught,” said Doucette.
Anglers were having some luck using PowerBait or worms but fly fishermen continue to catch fish with chironomids and midge emergers. Flies that have been working include zebra midges, frostbite chironomids, snowcones, red or green copper Johns and rootbeer Yankee buzzers.
“ Some black bass are being caught along with the occasional wiper. Remember, black bass( smallmouth and largemouth) must be returned immediately upon being caught until July 1,” he said. South Fork has been stocked with a total of approximately 28,000 trout this spring.
SOUTHERN OREGON ROUNDUP
Anglers Experience Mixed Results On Springers
ROSEBERG- According to the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife, the mainstem Umpqua is closed to wild steelhead harvest but remains open year-round for adipose finclipped steelhead. The mainstem has been low but it looks like it will be high for the weekend. Late winter steelhead should be decent with dropping river levels, with“ plunking” being a good strategy. Spring Chinook season is in full swing with regular reports of anglers catching fish throughout the main. Summer steelhead should begin migrating through the main in May.
On the Lower Rogue, spring Chinook fishing slowed down this week as water temperatures increased and flows dropped and cleared. Most angling pressure has been in the lower river and top of estuary.
Fishing for winter steelhead is winding down on the Middle Rogue now that many of the fish have

TRUCKEE – Kokanee salmon fishing is wide-open at Boca Reservoir. Anglers are bagging 14 to 16 inch salmon while trolling Uncle Larry’ s Spinners behind dodgers from Paulina Peak and Vance’ s Tackle, advised Cal Kellogg Fish Sniffer Editor.
However, boat launching is a challenge now at Boca.“ We heard the kokes were biting,

A few spring Chinook salmon have been landed, but fishing for Chinook remains slow. Chinook have been caught on bait-wrapped Kwikfish and roe. Anglers are reminded that only hatchery Chinook with clipped adipose fins may be retained.
Turning to trout fishing, Applegate Reservoir has been stocked with legal-size and twopound rainbow trout. Trolling with a Wedding Ring / bait combination has been effective, as has still fishing with bait from the shore. Fishing for smallmouth bass should be good with the warm weather forecast this week. The water temperature was 52 degrees as of Monday morning, and the lake is 97 percent full. Hart- Tish Park and boat ramp are now open. The Copper Boat Ramp is also open.
In Coos County, trout were stocked into Powers Pond last week. Due to complications Mingus Park Pond was not stocked but those fish were stocked into Middle Empire Lake. If possible we will try to stock Mingus Park Pond in the next couple of weeks. Trout were stocked earlier this month in Empire lakes, Bradley Lake, and Tenmile Lakes. Anglers are having success catching trout using small spinners or PowerBait.
