still getting more than 40 a day. For
example, we brought 46 fish to the
boat yesterday on spinning gear,”
proclaimed Kirk Portocarrero of
SacRiverGuide.Com.
“We’ve been using egg imitations
almost exclusively. The trout are
hungry and they have a hard time
laying off something they think is a
salmon egg. Most of the rainbows
we see are 15 to 16 inches, but we
get fish up to and over 20 every day.
All of them have been fighting like
demons,” said Kirk.
“Right now the best fishing is up in
the Redding city limits near Sundial
Bridge. I think we are in for a great
spring and early summer on the Sac.
We’ll see little ups and downs in the
action from day to day, but overall
I think the wild rainbow fishing is
going to be consistently good and
very exciting,” continue Porocarrero.
Captain Mike Bogue of Mike
Bogue’s Guide Service has been
hitting the water occasionally and
when he has, big beautiful rainbows
have been the result.
Bogue’s clients are mixing things
up. In shallow areas, back trolled
plugs are accounting for their hook
ups. In the deeper slots and runs
both Pautzke salmon eggs and
Pautzke cured roe are doing the trick
while side drifting.
Bogue’s schedule will start to fill
up now that warmer weather has
arrived. If you want to get out on
the water with him, now is the time
to call and reserve a spot- (530)

RIO VISTA
Spring Winds Challenge
Anglers
RIO VISTA - Spring winds arrived
on the California Delta, forcing many
anglers to abandon good striped
bass and sturgeon fishing.
Trolling and live bait were the top
tactics for striped bass, according
to Craig Kamikawa at Fisherman’s
Warehouse in Sacramento this
week, before high winds pounded
the area mid-last week.
“The mornings aren’t bad. The
afternoons get real uncomfortable,”
he related. “The San Joaquin is still
fishing better than the Sacramento.
Work the stretch between Prisoners
Point and San Andreas Shoal.”
Sturgeon stuck around from
Cache Slough to Decker Island.
“There have been a few
oversize sturgeon landed. The
nice thing is the current has
been so strong and it doesn’t
change from outgoing due to
all the water releases up north,”
he said.
Ghost shrimp, eel and
salmon roe were Kamikawa’s
recommendation for baits to
target the diamond backs.

ROLLINS LAKE
Bass And Catfish
Bite With Improving
Clarity
COLFAX - “I’ve been fishing
at Rollins quite a bit recently,
but I haven’t found any trout.
Instead of trout, I’ve been
focused on bass and catfish,”
reported Jason Pleece of
Meadow Vista.
“The bass fishing has been
good in both the Bear River
and Greenhorn Arms for
spotted bass from 11 inches to

about 3 pounds. I’ve gotten some
fish on crankbaits, but the best
bait for me has been 4 inch dark
colored Senkos whacky rigged. I’m
dead sticking them around downed
trees and off steeply dropping
banks,” said Pleece.
“For catfish, I’ve been soaking
worms and chicken livers in
shallow areas, where the water is
the warmest and I’ve had some
success on channel cats up to 4
pounds. I don’t think there are a
lot of catfish in Rollins so it takes
some patience to hook up, but it’s
a nice change of pace from bass
fishing,” added Pleece.

SACRAMENTO - Both American
shad and stripers are showing in
good numbers on the Sacramento
metropolitan area, but most of the
stripers continue to be shakers or
small schookie keepers in the 18 to
22 inch class.
