PYRAMID LAKE
It’ s Transition Time
RENO- Pyramid Lake is in a state of transition. The spring spawning period is coming to an end, and the fish are leaving the shallows and heading back out to deeper water. The water is still quite cool for it being early May, but the fish are definitely losing interest in cruising the beaches.
The best times of day to catch fish from the shore now are early or late in the day on most days. If the wind blows long enough to generate some waves that cloud up the water, actively feeding fish may also make a foray into the shallows. These fish are most likely post spawn fish trying to put weight back on.
Overall, early May is not considered a good time to be on the water at Pyramid Lake. The spawn is pretty much done, and the fish are beginning to leave the shallows. However, the lake hasn’ t stratified yet, and the trout could be at almost any depth.
Good areas to begin looking for post spawn fish are typically around Warrior’ s Point and Monument on the northwest side of the lake. Boaters can do well here trolling U-20 Flatfish along the bottom.
Shore fishermen can get into cutthroats by casting and retrieving ½- 3 / 4 oz. Kastmasters, ¼ oz. marabou jigs, and of course fly fishermen can still find action by dragging wooly buggers along the bottom.
Expect the angling crowd to diminish with every coming weekend as more and more options become available. The South Nets Beach just reopened from all the damage roads during the January floods. Call the tribal ranger station for a list of closed locations.

QUARRY LAKES
Smallmouths Are In The Shallows
FREMONT- Black bass are hitting at Horseshoe and Rainbow Lakes in the Quarry Lakes Recreation Area.
“ They have been moving into shallow waters to build nests and spawn,” said Joe Sullivan of the East Bay Regional Park District.“ Most of fish are smallmouths, with a few largemouths mixed in.”
“ Please remember that we do not stock bass in our lakes. With this crucial spawn season we ask that you catch and release your bass in order to sustain a vibrant bass population here at Quarry,” Sullivan urged.
The trout bite remains inconsistent, with the best bite found within a few days of the fish plants, according to Sullivan. The latest plant of 750 pounds of rainbows went in the week of May 8.
There has been positive tests for bluegreen algae in and around the swimming area. Park visitors should be watchful of their dogs, taking care that they do not contact the water. Currently our boat ramp and fishing pier are both open.
Remember: The use of lead fishing tackle is prohibited at Quarry Lakes. You can exchange lead tackle at the kiosk in a“ 1 for 1” trade for stainless steel weights.

OCCUPATION HAZARD
THE SONOMA COAST by Kathie Morgan
Sunday’ s newspaper carried the tragic tale of Dr. Gilbert Kalonde and his now-famous fishing license. He bought the troublesome license for $ 26 in Montana in April 2015.
He could have bought it online, an option in Montana since 2003. This would have eliminated his distress and also the basis for the lawsuit he filed against Wal * Mart.
Instead, according to the complaint, Kalonde, an assistant professor at Montana State University, suffered“ hatred, contempt and ridicule” after the Wal * Mart employee who sold him his license wrote Kalonde’ s occupation as“ CLEAN TOILETS.” In all caps, we’ re told.
Nobody noticed at first, not even Kalonde, even though it was in ALL CAPS and even though he was legally required to verify the accuracy of his personal information when he signed the document at the time of the sale.
The Bozeman Daily Chronicle tells how, in February 2016( 10 months later), Dr. Kalonde came to suffer“ disgrace and obloquy.” In a story headlined“ MSU professor sues Wal- Mart,” staff writer Whitney Bermes writes that Kalonde while on a lunch break showed his license to his teaching assistant while other students were around.
His embarrassment began when the student asked him if he had changed jobs. Kalonde returned to Wal * Mart and demanded – and got – a corrected fishing license.
He was shocked and ashamed, he says, because in his home country of Zambia those who clean toilets“ are the lowest social class, and are shunned and avoided by society.”
Here I’ d like to address Dr. Kalonde directly.“ Get over it. You are no longer in Zambia but in the good old USA, where we do not shun people for doing such necessary tasks as toilet cleaning. We appreciate them, in fact. And we don’ t separate people by social classes.”
In April 2017 Kalonde and his ACLU attorney filed a lawsuit, charging Wal * Mart with a single count of libel. In an interview with NBC, Kalonde suggested that the Wal * Mart employee was influenced by racial bias.
Another point. This year
my 2017 fishing license measures 4 feet 8 inches in length. And yet nowhere does it give my occupation. Bad enough that it lists my weight as … well, never mind.
So I asked Hank Worsech of the Montana Dept. of Fish Wildlife and Parks. Why do they ask for an angler’ s occupation? What do they do with the information?
Turns out it might be useful in investigations. I can see how it might, especially if you write down“ poaching” or“ embezzlement” – or fail to notice when a store employee writes it down for you in ALL CAPS.
Fables end with a moral. So … if the law requires you to verify the accuracy of the information on your fishing license, do it before you sign and pay. Don’ t show your license to anyone not in law enforcement.
If you don’ t want the folks back home in Zambia to know how disgraced you were in this country, don’ t let yourself be interviewed by radio, TV and newspaper reporters. If your job as an MSU professor doesn’ t offer a decent wage, don’ t try to augment it by suing Wal * Mart.
With my license tucked away well out of sight, I’ ll be looking for you on the banks.
