While trolling with Joe Aksamit of Joefish Guide Service, they also found top- notch striped bass action. “The anglers landed 12 fish, but we had 30 other bites,” said Aksamit. ‘We went through 2-1/2 trays of anchovies and a bag of threadfin shad. We caught the fish while trolling at 16 to 25 feet deep in the main body, including the area near the dam.” Smith said this has been a “very consistent year” for striped bass at New Hogan, with the lake at full capacity as water surged into the lake from the Calaveras River during the big storms this season. “The fish have been smaller this year, averaging 18 to 21 inches,” Smith noted, “but the fishing is very good. Earlier this spring we caught a 6-1/2 pounder and 2 five pounders. Our best day so far this season was 16 fish for two anglers fishing with me.” Smith does most of his fishing for trout and salmon on the Mother Lode lakes or fall Chinook salmon on the Sacramento River, but he looks for- ward to his trips to New Hogan for a change of pace. “I like fishing New Hogan because it offers something different from the salmon and trout fishing that I do on the Mother Lode lakes,” he said. “It’s fun to catch 2 to 6 pound stripers on light trout tackle. The only difference is that I use heavier line, 40 lb. braided line with 12 lb. test leader, and bigger hooks to target the stripers.” However, Smith cautioned that Del e k La wa y ey Facilities Information: U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, New Hogan Lake, 2713 Hogan Dam Road, Valley Springs, CA. 95252-8498, phone (209) 772-1343, email: NewHogan- info@usace.army.mil, Website: www.spk.usace.army.mil/ organizations/cespk-co/lakes/newhogan.html  Coyote Point rk  Guided fishing trips: Monte Smith of Gold Country Sportfishing, 209) 581-4734, www.goldcountrysportfishing. com.   Pa Day Use: Picnic sites are located in Fiddleneck Day Use Area and at the New Hogan Dam Observation Point near the Park Headquarters.
