COLUSA KNIGHTS LANDING
Stripers And Shad Dominate Early Summer Catches
COLUSA - Boaters and bank anglers are catching striped bass all of the way from Butte City to Knights Landing on the Sacramento River .
“ After the spawn , they normally go on a pretty good bite , particularly the bigger fish ,” said Sam Ayala of Kittle ’ s Outdoors . “ On my latest trip to Tisdale , we saw lots of fish spawning . We caught and released a few shakers and put two keepers in the boat . We caught the shakers on minnows and hooked the keepers on swimbaits . The stripers have also been spawning around Butte City .”
For shad , he recommended fishing on the shallow gravel bars around Colusa .
“ Not many people are fishing for them yet – most are still concentrating on stripers ,” he said . “ Anglers should use Pucci 1 / 8 oz . to 1 / 16 oz . jig heads , tipped with chartreuse , pink and white grub tails , weighed down with split shot .”
“ We ’ ve caught limits of stripers while drifting minnows on our recent trips up and down the Sacramento out of Tisdale ,” said Rob Reimers of Rustic Rob ’ s Guide Service . “ Most were 18 to 22 inch fish . On my latest trip with one client , we ran out of three dozen minnows catching our limits and releasing other fish .” by Dan Bacher
