Shad fishing is going strong,
particularly under the Highway 20
Bridge in Colusa. Fishermen are
doing best using 1/16 to 1/8 oz.
green-yellow jigheads, tipped with
chartreuse, pink or white grubs.
Bank anglers are hooking the shad
off the gravel and sand bars.
Rob Reimers of Rustic Rob’s
Guide Service reported “mixed bag”
fishing on a recent trip with Ernie
Marlan of the Fish Sniffer, his son,
Andrew, and his son’s friend, Bobby,
on the Sacramento out of Tisdale.
“We caught and released quite a
few shakers, along with two keepers
including one from 12 to 14 pounds,”
said Reimers. “We also hooked a
big shad and a 5 lb. catfish while
using minnows.”
DAVIS/FRENCHMAN
LAKES
Largemouth Bass
Begin Showing
PORTOLA – Recent catches at
Lake Davis were highlighted by the
return of largemouth bass since
nearly a decade of absence since
the lake was chemically treated to
remove northern pike.
“The bass numbers are finally
increasing,” reported Jeanne
Graham of the J&J Grizzly Store
and Camping Resort. “Anglers
fishing from boat and shore are
hooking largemouth bass ranging
from juveniles to 20 inches while
throwing Ral-L-Traps and other lures
in the Camp Five area.”
The trout fishing is “slow to fair,”
depending upon whom you talk to.
“Several anglers fly fishing with
guide John Baiocchi reported
catching and releasing rainbows
from 19 to 24 inches while using
damsel fly patterns in 1 foot of
water on the lake’s west side,” she
reported.
Trollers working copper Dick Nite
copper red heads and red dot frog
Needlefish are also hooking some
rainbows at 7 to 25 feet deep.
Bank fishermen tossing
out worms and PowerBait are
experiencing “decent” trout action at
Mallard, she said.
Lake Davis is holding 84,451
acre-feet of water, 102percent
of capacity and 125 percent of
average.
Trout fishing at Frenchman Lake
remains “great” for bank fishermen
and trollers, reported Shirley Wiggin
at Wiggin’s Trading Post in Chilcoot.
The top baits are nightcrawlers and
PowerBait.
Will from Reno caught 5 rainbows
ranging from 14-18” in length while
using nightcrawlers around the
dam. George Halverson and Jeff
Ryan from Graeagle, CA caught
and released over a dozen rainbows
averaging 17-18” while trolling with
small flies.
The lake is continuing to spill over
the spill way and all campgrounds
are open.
Frenchman Lake is holding
55,602 acre-feet of water, 100
percent of capacity and 133 percent
of average.

LIVERMORE - Rainbow trout
offer anglers their best chance of
going home with fish at Lake Del
Valle at this time.
“The weather this week has been
astounding with temperatures in
the low 70s to mid 80s with little to
no wind on most days,” said Cody
McGarry of the Rocky Mountain
Recreation Company. “The surface
temperature this week has risen to
a beautiful 75 degrees. Fishing has
slowed down this week with trout
still being the hot bite.”
“If you are shore fishing for trout,
I would recommend either the east
beach with some garlic PowerBait
or take a little walk down the dog
run trail,” he disclosed. “From boat I
would recommend using smaller jerk
baits, crappie jigs or Kastmasters.
Many anglers have had luck inside
the different coves.
“Stripers are still a little slow with
few anglers hooking up into them.
Most anglers are catching them off
either anchovies, nightcrawlers or
sardines. I would fish either in the
lower or upper narrows in 20 feet or
less of water,” he noted.
He hasn’t heard any reports of
catfish being taken lately.
Alex and Joe of Hayward caught
4 trout, weighing a total of 10
pounds, in Badger Cove. Guillermo
caught 1 striper weighing 4 pounds
off the west bank. Finally, Anthony of
San Jose caught 5 trout weighing at
total of 10 pounds in Tarantula Cove.
