Last time we ventured to the

395 side of the state, via Reno. A month later, the passes are still closed. A minor surprise was the snowstorm on May15, I believe, adding more delays on to the openings. Had to cancel our annual shad outing on the Sac due to high water and marina closures.

Berryessa Bass Adventure

Started shadding in the early 70’ s and this is the first seasonal cancellation since. Almost as bad, no shot at stripers either. I know the Feather kicked in, however my 16-foot Lund has an outboard.
After jet boating that creek for over 20 years, I know better than to brave the rocks and debris for a fish, even during the higher flows. Just not up to date on river conditions and it’ s not worth getting into trouble that we couldn’ t get out of. So, where to fish?
Wait a minute, what about Berryessa? Steve, who used to work
with me back in our guiding days hadn’ t been there in years and decided that my historic knowledge of the lake would be of some benefit, as my acquaintance with the lake began in 1960, followed by guiding for bass and trout, then kokanee as well.
So, pulling all of this valuable info out of my back pocket, as well as calling on a friend who bass fishes there about a dozen times in the Spring, we settled on a day. Weather was beautiful as we approached Markley Cove, right up until I stopped to check out the Glory Hole, which was overflowing. Fortunately my hat lodged against the fence rather than blow clear up to Putah Creek.
We launched and soon discovered that maximum visibility was about 4 inches. A deep diving and very noisy crankbait hooked 2 fish before we found a spot where the wind was almost nonexistent.
One of us tried a Senko and Steve

The Bay’ s Best Crew! caught a decent smallmouth right away on a clay wall while I continued to crank.
Soon my choice turned to a spinnerbait while Steve stuck with the Senko and got 4 more fish before I decided to change. My thought was to give him a big enough advantage to where it wouldn’ t hurt his feeling when I passed him up which didn’ t come to pass as even though my catch rate escalated, his stayed solid.
We tried drop shots around willows, but the Senko was the hot ticket that day. Finally the wind became so violent that the mouth of Wragg Canyon was harassed with whitecaps and gale force breezes. We quit with the clicker showing 17 total bass, almost all spots.
The next week we returned to water visibility at about 8 inches. WOW, could this get any better? Steve went right back to his Senko and my plan, try something different. A white spinnerbait worked on 2 fish, then quit.
So, back to a deep diving white cranker. Zip. Where’ s the drop shot? Didn’ t work either, so with some reluctance, pull out my box of about 92 Senkos and go with

what’ s working.
It did. We finally had to abhort the area with 20 MPH winds and headed into Big Portuguese Cove, north bank. It’ s gotta be time for a bite to eat. Steve kept working the shoreline while I tossed out a PB & J SchroomZ and let it drag along while I made a sandwich. Fish on! Hold that thought.
A few weeks later Tom, my 40 + year fishing buddy, joined in on the fun and we launched his Triton at Markley and headed out. Good news, much better visibility. My white crank worked right away and then we headed to the first willow, working it with a Senko and drop shot. Nada.
As we worked our way north, I managed a couple more fish while Tom had the“ stink” on his Senko. My spinnerbait got a couple of grabs on a shallow flat while Tom tossed a stick bait. Hmmm.
He’ s a talented bass fisherman and this was getting a tad out of hand. We hit another set of 3 willows and my drop shot kicked in with almost unbelievable numbers. Senko, 1 grab. By now it was time to say, that’ s fishing’.
As the main lake turned to whitecaps, we headed for the narrows, locating a west wall with almost no breeze. My cranker got 2 decent fish right away. Did you hold that thought?
A few years ago Tom discovered the SchroomZ and the first time he used it, took me to school on bass catching. Of course I bought some. We knew our day would end in about 45 minutes, so Tom pulled out the“ Z” and took me to school again during that time frame, while my bite quit altogether.
His flurry made the day for him, just adding to the mystique of this bait. I truly did enjoy his giggle with every hookup, at least up to a point. Next time we’ ll see if the river dropped enough to catch some shad. Seeya then and Tight Lines!
