trout and lots of bass at Rollins Lake, despite the fact that there has been lots of boat traffic,” reported Jason Pleece of Meadow Vista.“ There’ s really no pattern to the trout bite. I’ ve caught them on several different offerings. No. 2 Bikini Needlefish are working well as are threaded worms pulled behind Sep’ s Strike Master Dodgers.”
“ For bass you can catch numbers while dead sticking 4 inch wacky rigged Senkos throughout the day. Early and late the bass will come up and whack both small walking baits and small poppers. The average bass is a 1 pound spot, but bigger fish to about 3 pounds are around,” Pleece disclosed.
At Scotts, Flat both northern strain largemouths and smallmouth can be taken on topwater baits at first and last light. Senkos and 3 inch grubs will draw strikes throughout the day.
Some anglers have been trying for catfish at Scotts Flat, but the bite seems to be delayed this year due to cold water. by Cal Kellogg.
SACRAMENTO AREA
Capital City Boaters Battle Shad And Stripers
SACRAMENTO- Uncle Larry Barnes of Sacramento Pro Tackle enjoyed a twofor-one special of shad and stripers on his latest venture to the Sacramento River in the downtown area below Discovery Park.
“ I caught and released 6 shad while using 1 / 32 oz. jigheads with chartreuse tails from my boat,” said Barnes.“ I also released a half dozen stripers to 20-1 / 2 inches, as well as a bunch of shakers. The stripers all hit sardines. You can expect to catch one keeper striper for every 10 undersized fish.”
“ Three guys fishing below me in a boat caught and released around 75 shad in 6 hours of fishing,” noted Barnes.
He also said a lot of folks are hooking stripers and shad while fishing off Bryte Beach.
Simon at Broadway Bait Rod and Gun said the striper fishing has tapered off, although

fishermen are still picking up fish at Garcia Bend, Miller Park and Verona while using sardines and pileworms.

SAN PABLO RESERVOIR
Lighting Trout Strike Baits
EL SOBRANTE- Anglers are still bringing in trout while fishing brightly colored PowerBait and other offerings in in the early morning and the late afternoon hours. Some Lightning Trout are spicing up the catches.
For example, Terry Smith of Concord bagged two Lightning Trout while fishing from his kayak on the lake, reported Marcella Shoemaker of the Rocky Mountain Recreation Company.
The latest plant of 1,200 pounds of Mt. Lassen rainbow trout went into the lake at the boat ramp.
The lake level is 309.4 feet above sea level and the surface water temperature is 71.0 degrees.
SANTA CLARA VALLEY LAKES
Boaters Target Bass With Reaction Baits At Anderson, Calero
Catfish anglers are beginning to work Uvas and Chesbro, but are still scarce.
“ Typically when you start to see the really warm nights the guys start bringing in catfish. It’ s just around the corner,” Dominici related.

SHASTA / WHISKEYTOWN LAKES
Trout Bite Comes Together At Shasta
REDDING- The trout bite has improved significantly at Lake Shasta, while the bass bite remains steady. At Whiskeytown anglers continue to round up limits of kokanee that range up to 16 inches.
“ My wife Merina and I visited Shasta over the Memorial Day weekend. There was a lot of boat traffic, but the trout and bass fishing were both excellent,” reported Fish Sniffer reader Douglas Yates.“ I’ d go out bass fishing early and then I’ d head back and pick up my wife and we would troll for trout most of the afternoon. We fished for three full days.”
“ Finesse style worms worked best for the bass, but crankbaits were more fun to fish and produced plenty of action too. I caught 15 to 20 bass per morning while tossing shad imitating Rapala crankbaits,” said Yates.
“ The best trolling lure for trout was Shasta Tackle Wiggle Hoochies in pink or white colors without a dodger. The bait is just starting to
form into schools at this time. When you locate a school of shad, you can pick up several trout. Our largest rainbow of the trip measured 21 inches and we had a couple browns about that size too,” concluded Yates.
Shasta is currently 5 feet from maximum pool and basically holding steady.
Anglers fishing at Whiskeytown reported good action on a variety of lures including pink or orange hoochies teamed with watermelon Shasta Tackle Sling Blades and pink Apex Lures trolled without blades. Anglers have also been picking fish up on Uncle Larry’ s Spinners and Wedding Rings. The kokanee were holding from 15 to 35 feet deep as of press time.
SOUTHERN OREGON ROUNDUP
Mixed Bag Action Available In Southwest
ROSEBERG- The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife is reporting that there is a broad range of solid fishing opportunities in the southwestern portion of the state.
In terms of trout, Applegate Reservoir has been stocked with legal-size and two-pound rainbow trout. Trolling with a Wedding Ring / bait combination has been effective, as has still fishing with bait from the shore.
In Coos County, trout were stocked recently in in Bradley Lake, Empire Lakes, Butterfield Lake, Eel Lake, Saunders Lake, Tenmile Lakes, Powers Pond and Sru Lake. Anglers are having success catching trout using small spinners or PowerBait.
Trout have been stocked in the Millicoma Pond at the Millicoma Interpretive Center and fishing is excellent for young children. Millicoma Pond is intended for children under the age of 12. Please call before traveling to Millicoma Pond to make sure the gates are open. The phone number is( 541) 267-2557.
Fish Lake has been stocked with legal-size and trophy-size rainbow trout. Brook trout, tiger trout, and stocked Chinook salmon are also available. Fishing for rainbow trout and Chinook salmon has been fair.
On the salmon fishing front, boat anglers on the lower Rogue are picking up springers consistently, but the majority of fish have been wild. Most angling pressure has been in the lower river and the top of estuary.
On the salt, recreational Chinook salmon fishing is open from Cape Falcon to Humbug Mountain. Anglers may have two salmon per day but is closed to retention of coho except during the selective and non-selective coho seasons. The selective coho season opens

COYOTE- Bass and crappie continue to provide anglers with excellent action for anglers while others gear up for catfish.
Bass fishing continued to produce great results for anglers making use of reaction and finesse baits according to the pro staff at Coyote Bait and Tackle.
“ A lot of of guys are starting off the day with reaction baits like topwater and crankbaits and by the afternoon they’ re fishing a drop shot or a jig,” said Jason Dominici.“ Anderson and Calero are both fishing the same way, and Coyote is fishing well too but they’ re throwing some bigger baits.”
Crappie fishing was good for anglers working minnows.
“ Calero and Chesbro are your two best bets for crappie. Check the coves at Chesbro and the boat launch area at Calero. Set your bobbers two to four feet deep,” he tipped.
