SOUTHERN OREGON ROUNDUP cont. been excellent at Diamond Lake. A significant portion of fish caught have been larger than 12-inches. Diamond Lake was stocked with tiger trout. These fish are intended to assist in controlling illegally introduced tui chub. Tiger trout are catch-and-release only and need to be released immediately and unharmed if caught.

Last fall Howard Prairie was stocked with over 150,000 six-inch trout, followed by 10,000 legal-sized trout this spring. These fish are 9- to 13-inches now, and are growing quickly on the abundant food available in the full reservoir this year. Fishing should be good, especially with the holdover trout up to 20-inches still being caught.

Still fishing by boat with PowerBait, or trolling flashers like a ford fender with a worm or a wedding ring / worm combination should be good. Bank anglers continue to have steady success at the jetty( a universal access fishing platform is available) and at the dam. Trout anglers need to be prepared for light bites because the fish are feeding very well on natural food items.

On the ocean, bottom fishing has been good when the ocean conditions allow. Fishing for bottom fish is now restricted to inside the 30-fathom curve. A few black rockfish have been seen feeding on / near the surface recently.

Recreational Chinook salmon fishing is open from Cape Falcon to Humbug Mountain. Anglers may have two salmon per day but is closed to retention of coho except during the selective and non-selective coho seasons. The selective coho season opens on June 24 through July 31 or until the 18,000 marked coho quota has been met.

Macks Provide Best Sport

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE- The kokanee bite has yet to get underway at Lake Tahoe and the lake’ s browns and rainbows have been playing hard to get recently, but the mackinaw bite is steady with fish running 3 to 8 pounds. And there are some trophy size double digit macks showing up randomly, which keeps things pretty exciting for deep water trollers.

The skippers at Tahoe Sportfishing have been putting their clients on limits of quality mackinaw while trolling minnows teamed with flashers at various locations around the lake. The biggest mack in recent days was caught during a June 17 trip piloted by Captain Zack up to the north shore. The fish measured 30 inches in length and weighed in at well over 10 pounds.

Mickey employs a variety of different lures for his fish including Shasta Tackle Kok-A-Nuts teamed with Sling Blade dodgers.

The staff at Mountain Hardware in Truckee reported solid mackinaw action at Donner Lake. The macks are holding 70 to 90 feet deep in China Cove. Most of these fish go 5 to 8 pounds and can be tempted with spoons such as large Needlefish, Hum Dingers and Kastmasters.

Trollers Nail Kings, Kokanee

WEAVERVILLE – Trollers are starting to pick up some quality king and kokanee salmon at Trinity Lake for the first time in a couple of years.

Two anglers fishing with Alex Ross of Trinity Guide Company on his latest trip caught limits of kokanee salmon n the 12 to 13-1 / 2 inch range while trolling with Vance’ s orange Sockeye Slammers, tipped with white shoepeg corn, behind white / pink flashers They trolled in the south end near the dam at 40 to 80 feet deep.

“ The fishing has been really hit and miss,” he noted.“ Another scout trip produced two kokanee and one 4 lb. king salmon. So far this season, we’ ve caught four decent-sized kings.”

Fork, Stewarts Fork, Swift Creek and Upper Trinity, continue to land rainbows, a mixture of holdovers and planters. They’ re tossing out marshmallows, nightcrawlers, PowerBait, Kastmasters, spinners and other offerings for the trout.

“ The bass fishing continues to hold its own at Trinity Lake,” said Brady.“ You can catch them just about anyway you desire to fish, ranging from casting top water lures to fishing jigs, worms and swimbaits at 25 to 35 feet deep.”

There are still fish in pre-spawn, spawn and post spawn mode, due to the unique up and down water conditions on the lake this season, noted Brady. Both smallmouth and largemouth bass to 5 pounds are showing.

The reservoir is holding 2,217,789 feet of water, 91 percent of capacity and 106 percent of average at press time.

The Bureau of Reclamation is ramping the releases down slowly from 2,700 cfs on June 16 to 1,100 cfs on July 15. The releases for this“ extremely wet” 2017 water year will result in an annual total volume of 815,000 acre-feet. More information www. trrp. net / background / rod /

Dodge The Wind And Catch Fish ….

BRANNAN ISLAND- Both striped bass and sturgeon fishing are a bit hit and miss in the West Delta, but if you are able to cope with the strong summer wind and hot daytime temperatures there are fish to be had.

Trollers are working the Sacramento River upstream from the Power Lines with deep running Yo-Zuris. On any given day, trollers are encountering more shaker stripers than keepers, but limits are possible for the persistent.

Bait fishing may be the best option in the West Delta at this point. Ghost shrimp, grass shrimp and shad are all producing stripers in the lower end of the Sacramento and throughout Suisun Bay.

These same baits along with eel and salmon roe are tempting sturgeon from various spots downstream from the Power Lines, including the PG & E plant in Pittsburg, the Moth Ball Fleet and

This is a good time to stake out an area and experiment with different baits rigged on barbless hooks. The main target of such an adventure is sturgeon, but there are enough stripers around that a bonus bass or two is likely.

Black bass anglers are using punching gear to pull largemouth bass out of the weeds, while anglers working the rip rap with Senkos, jigs, Ned Rigs and crawfish pattern crankbaits are rounding up hard fighting smallmouths.

Anglers Keep Nailing Trout In Deep Water

ELKO- Water levels are the highest in years and the lake continues to spill from snow melt, according to Joe Doucette of the Nevada Department of Wildlife. Surface water temperatures have climbed into the sixtiesand fishing for trout is good.

“ Anglers report some good fishing in the Hendricks Arm, near the warm springs on the west side and in the last cove before the canyon by the highway” said Doucette.“ Anglers have also had luck at the south end of the luck by the old road bed wear Hot Creek enters the lake.”

“ Expect bass fishing to be slow this year as the bass fishery recovers from the drought. If you do catch some smallmouth, they must be returned immediately to the water until July 1,” he noted.

Fly rodders should be using chironomids, hares ears, PT’ s and wooly buggers,” said Doucette.

The campground is open and is on a first come, first served basis. Wildhorse has been stocked with more than 43,000 catchable trout this spring, Doucette added.
