Sonoma Coast Salmon Ready To Bust Wide-Open !

BODEGA BAY - Get ready for the salmon explosion to break out along the Sonoma County coastline as the arrival of calm weather should turn the cold , clear water brown and make for outstanding ocean conditions for salmon fishermen .

Captain Rick Powers of Bodega Bay Sport Fishing said , “ It has been windy all week long , but we have been able to work the reefs both north and south of the harbor for limits of rockfish and a good count of lings . We went south with 30 anglers , and we brought home limits of all quality rockfish – the bottom grabbers of vermilion , copper , china , browns , gophers , and quillbacks with no school fish in the mix along with 22 lings to 17 pounds . The lings were all big in the 12 to 14-pound range . We also found good action up north at Timber Cove this week .”

“ On Friday , July 21st , I took out a charter that wanted salmon , and although it has been blowing all week and the water temperature is cold at 49 degrees and the water is clear , we scratched out 15 salmon to 17 pounds for 18 anglers ,” Powers stated .

“ This took place in 20 knot of wind , and I have never seen nearly a fish per rod in cold , clear water like this . When we get the marine layer over here , the salmon bite will bust out . We went through 30 weights to put in the 15 fish as there were some lost fish , at least 7 silvers released , and a few short fish . I will be running combination trips throughout the remainder of the salmon season .”

Halibut Action Is Solid On Small Tides

SAN FRANCISCO – Live bait fishing for halibut has been very good on the small tides , but slowed down when bigger tides arrived over the weekend of July 22-23 .

“ During the week , our anglers averaged 1 to 2 fish per rod on halibut ,” said Erik Anfinson , captain of the Bass Tub . “ The fishing has been best in San Francisco Bay off Crissy Field . Most of fish are in the 7 to 12 pound range .”

The boat ended up with 11 halibut and 1 striper for 15 passengers on its latest adventure .

“ We expect the halibut fishing to rebound during the slower tides ,” added Anfinson . “ Meanwhile , we ’ re planning to troll for salmon over the next three days .”

EL GRANADA - Half Moon Bay is the epicenter of salmon activity on the California coast with limits all around for area party boats .

“ Anglers are just slaying the salmon while trolling at the Deep Reef ,” reported Eric at Half Moon Bay Sportfishing Center . “ The Que Sera Sera came back to the wharf with early limits both on Saturday , July 22 , and Sunday , July 23 .”

Captain Steve Mitchell of Hook ’ d Up Sport Fishing out of Berkeley was on his way back to the bay by 11:00 a . m . on Saturday with 6 limits of salmon to 28 pounds with special guest , linebacker Dekoda Watson of the San Francisco 49ers and his wife on the boat to enjoy the ‘ light ’ s out action .”

Captain John McGee of Legal Limits Sport Fishing had 4 limits of salmon in the box within 20 minutes on Sunday morning at the Deep Reef , and to say the action is ‘ wide open ’ would be an understatement .

Captain Dennis Baxter of the New Captain Pete out of Pillar Point Harbor put in 10 limits on Friday , and he said , “ I have had clients I haven ’ t seen in 3 to 4 years as they are migrating to the epicenter . We put in 10 limits to 16 pounds , and these are good ‘ party boat fish ’ as people can handle them . There are fish all over the place as I was up at 15 / 30 and Captain Tom Mattusch was at 25 / 40 - ten miles apart . There is dark water seven miles off of the coast .”
