FRESHWATER REPORTS:

AMERICAN BASIN cont. with white corn, behind dodgers, at 55 to 60 feet deep.
“ Anglers are catching 13 to 16 inch limits of kokanee at Union Valley,” confirmed Craig Newton at Willfish Bait and Tackle.“ One customer reported success on GVF action mad action dodgers teamed with GVF spinner bugs. The pink dodger / gold and pink bug and green dodger / green and gold bug combos have been working best.”
“ One angler reported catching really nice smallmouth bass in the 1-1 / 2 to 2-1 / 2 lb. range in the Middle Fork of the American River above the confluence with the North Fork,” said Newton.“ He was targeting trout with gold Kastmasters.”
If you want to catch kokanee up to 16 inches at Hell Hole Reservoir, Boaters should troll with hoochies and spinner bugs behind dodgers at 45 feet deep. Anglers fast trolling with Rapalas and Tasmanian Devils along the shoreline in the early morning hours should also pick up some German browns.
AMERICAN RIVER
Anglers Battle A Few Scrappy Jacks
SACRAMENTO- Few fishermen have hit the lower American River lately for salmon, but fishing should perk up when the weather cools and more fall-run Chinooks begin to ascend the river in September.
“ One customer reported landing two small Chinooks weighing 3 and 5 pounds while jigging from his boat in the Howe Avenue area,” said Alan Fong of Fisherman’ s Warehouse.
“ The fishing at the mouth of the American is hit and miss,” stated Fong.“ Most of the fish are hitting jigs in the early morning hours. Many of the fish are in the 6 to 8 lb. range, along with some larger ones in the teens.”
Fong said a few anglers are targeting stripers on the American. but they’ re been tight-lipped about how they’ re been doing.
“ Your best bet for stripers now is to fish swimbaits and wake baits above the Hazel

Avenue Bridge,” noted Fong.
Uncle Larry Barnes at Sacramento Pro Tackle added that boaters are picking up a few salmon while working jigs between the 16th Street and railroad trestle bridges on the lower American.
Water releases from Nimbus Dam in the American continue to be 3,500 cfs, reported Peggy Manza of Reclamation.

FRESHWATER

WINTERS- Black bass fishing is going strong for good-sized spotted, largemouth, and smallmouth bass at Lake Berryessa.
“ On my last trip there, two anglers and I landed 12 quality bass,” reported Don Paganelli of Paganelli’ s Bass Fishing Experience.“ All of the fish we landed were spots and largemouths except for one smallmouth. The largest fish weighed 4 pounds and the bass averaged 2-1 / 2 pounds each.”
“ We fished drop shot rigs and Carolinarigged Aaron’ s Magic Robo Worms in the main body of the lake at about 20 feet deep,” said Paganelli.“ The fish were holding around submerged willows and off points.”
Rainbow trout fishing has slowed down at Berryessa.“ Over three days of fishing, we landed near-limits of fish on one trip and experienced a scratch bite on the other two,” said Troy Barr of T-Roy’ s Guide Service.“ We trolled Apex lures and Brady’ s Kokanee Cut Plugs at 50 to 66 feet deep.”
BULLARDS BAR / ENGLEBRIGHT LAKES
Kokanee Salmon Bite Tapers Off
DOBBINS – The kokanee bite has slowed down on Bullards Bar as the fish get ready to spawn.
“ I haven’ t gone up there over the past couple weeks, but a friend, fishing with two other anglers, reported landing 12 fish out of 30 bites on his latest trip,” said Rob Reimers of Rustic Rob’ s Guide Service.“ Most of the kokanee were in the 12 inch range. The males are starting to get little humps on their backs as they prepare for spawning.”
The fishermen trolled at 70 feet deep with hoochies, Weddings Rings and other lures all over the lake, said Reimers.
Reimers has been focusing on king salmon below the Thermalito Afterbay Outlet lately. On his latest trips before the kokanee slowdown, Reimers reported
Diane Tatu of Wilton was trolling for kokanee at Lake Pardee on July 23 when this huge 6.8 lb rainbow decided to strike.

consistent 10 fish limits while trolling with Brad’ s Kokanee Cut Pugs.
Bullards Bar Reservoir is holding 842,447 acre-feet of water, 83 percent of capacity, and 112 percent of average.
Fishing pressure at Englebright Reservoir has been light lately, due to the large numbers of recreational boaters hitting the lake and the hot weather. Englebright is a sleeper for trollers to pursue beautiful holdover rainbows and a few wild German browns.
Englebright is holding 67,573 acre-feet of water, 97 percent of capacity and 112 percent of average.

CAMANCHE LAKE
Huge Catfish And Bass Hit The Late Summer Scales!
BURSON- Water surface temperatures at Lake Camanche are between 80 and 84 degrees, making the conditions ideal for channel catfish action.
Just ask Adam Comstock, a local angler, who brought in a 10.62 lb. catfish. He reported he was fishing the north shore day use and using mackerel for bait.
Peter Kutsar brought in two cats weighing in at 8.13 and 9.24 lbs. while using cornmeal.
Regular angler Robbie Dunham of Galt went out on the lake with friends Dustin and Chris, reporting solid trout fishing.
“ We fished for trout from 1:00 pm to 6:00 pm,” said Dunham.“ We lost the first fish, but boated the next 9. We trolled at 35 ′ to 45 ′ with Speedy Shiners from Little Hat to the Dam. Dustin Marsh and Chris Jensen were the anglers fishing with me.”
Novice angler Devon Lewis of Stockton had a great day bass fishing at Camper’ s Cove on Saturday, August 12.
“ He’ s a natural at catching bass,” said Terri Willard at the Camanche Recreation Company.“ The store staff said he was using a purple Robo Worm when he landed three chunky bass weighing 5.98, 3.14 and 2.45 pounds.”

3119 reported catching his new“ personal best” bass, a 10 lb. 13 oz. largemouth, from Lake Camanche.
“ I’ m absolutely stoked,” he commented.“ A 4-1 / 2 inch Margarita Mutilator Roboworm on a drop shot set-up was the winning rig.”
Lake Camanche was 88 % full at the time of this post. Lake Pardee is releasing approximately 492 cubic feet per second( cfs) while Camanche is releasing approximately 701 cfs. The elevation of Lake Camanche was 228.67 ′ at press time.
LAKE CHABOT
Lake Crappie Record Shattered!
CASTRO VALLEY- Francisco Escobar of Castro Valley carefully caught and released a 2.34 lb crappie at Lake Chabot, a new lake record, on August 16. He landed the fish while fishing a lure near tules.
The most consistent fishing available now is for largemouth bass and channel catfish, reported Dominic Cotroneo of the Lake Chabot Marina and Café.
“ Boaters are catching and releasing good numbers of bass,” he stated.“ Anglers are hooking smaller sub-legal bass while throwing out Kastmasters and spinners. They’ re catching better fish in the 2 to 3 pound range while using Senkos. The best area changes daily; today it is Half Moon Bay.”
If you want to hook feisty channel catfish, Cotroneo recommended fishing mackerel from shore and boat in Honker Bay. For example, one fisherman landed three cats weighing 7, 7 and 3 pounds while soaking mackerel in Honker Bay.
The park district is still stocking catfish, but will begin planting rainbow trout when the water cools down next month. The lake is 100 percent full.
