FRESHWATER Sept. 1-15, 2017 FRESHWATER REPORTS: CONTINUED FROM PG 21 NEW MALONES cont. and juvenile bass, Liechty expects to see a “phenomenal” fishery for big bass within two years. “The reaction bite has been slow with the fish more reluctant to chase with the warm surface temperatures in the 80 to 84 degree range, but there is so much food in the lake, they don’t have to search for food,” he said. “I did land a 4-pound bass on a frog this week, but the topwater bite has been slow.” NORTHWESTERN NEVADA Truckee River Receives Summer Plants RENO - The Truckee River received major trout infusions on Thursday, July 27 and Tuesday, August 8. This is great news for those looking to catch a limit of naive trout. NDOW likes to stock the metro area of the Truckee by driving to a downtown Reno bridge and pumping the fish off of the side of the bridge into the river. That means that in the areas directly downstream of bridges like Booth, Arlington and Kuenzli anglers will find easy pickings. Other spots to look for fresh planters are easily accessible parks like Mayberry Park on the west side of Reno. The fresh planters don’t take a whole lot of skill to catch. Nightcrawlers drifted on 6-8 lb. test with a split shot or two work really well. Salmon eggs and PowerBait would be distant seconds and thirds respectively. Second only to the nightcrawler for finding fresh planters is the inline spinner such as a Panther Martin. Not all of these fish will be quickly caught. A very small handful will grow into quality holdovers and trophy fish in the 3-6 pound range. These fish will get smarter with every day they spend in the river, and duping them is no small task. For anglers looking for more of a challenge, these are the fish they seek. Evenings and early mornings are usually the best time. About the time when it seems too dark to see where you’re casting is typically when the river’s biggest fish will go on the bite. J-7 and J-9 Rapalas. in natural colors work very well, as do F-7, F-9, and even F-11 Rapalas. Fly fishermen often catch their biggest fish in the middle of the day while nymphing with stonefly, mayfly and caddis patterns. - Mike McNeilly Sacramento & Feather River Salmon Trips! 24ft Alumaweld Jet Boat G-Loomis & Shimano Gear Provided Salmon • Trout • Stripers Shad • Steelhead • Sturgeon Professional Guide Robert Weese since 1985. LAKE OROVILLE Small Spotted Bass Are Abundant YUBA CITY – Small spotted bass in to 10 to 13 inch range are quite abundant in the catches at Lake Oroville now. For better quality fish, your top prospect is to throw out top water lures such as Zara Spooks and Pop-Rs early and late in the day. “After the sun goes on the water in the morning, it’s best to fish with shakey heads, drop shot rigs and tubes at 20 to 40 feet deep,” said Jack Lightsey at Johnson’s Bait and Tackle. “You can pick whatever arm of the lake to fish – they’re all producing bass now.” One customer told him that he found a concentration of salmon biting down at 100 feet deep, but didn’t indicate what lures he was trolling with or where he was fishing.
