“ Our latest catfish plant from Mt. Lassen featured 1,200 lbs of channel cats, bringing our total to 11,000 lbs of cats planted this season thus far,” said Pacheco.“ The best fishing has been in the morning or after visitor centers hours before the park closes.”
Current hours are now 6:30 am- 7:30 pm, while the Visitor Center always closes 2 ½ hours before the park.
LOS VAQUEROS RESERVOIR
Striped Bass Are Boiling
BYRON- Striped bass have been“ boiling” as they pursue shad and other baitfish all over at Los Vaqueros Reservoir, but few anglers have been throwing top water lures for them lately, largely due to the hot weather of recent weeks.
With the cooler fall weather we are now seeing, expect the fishing pressure to pick up for not only stripers, but for trout, catfish and black bass.
Most of the stripers remain under the minimum length of 18 inches, but a few bigger fish area showing. Bert Palmon of Fremont demonstrated his angling prowess by enticing a 13 lb. striper with an anchovy in Cowboy Cove.

The water temperature have hovered between 72 and 75 degrees depending on the time of day, making the trout fishing tougher for shore fishermen. Trout fishing should improve as fall trout plants begin after the water temperature cools down below 70 degrees.
For maximum trout success, fish in South Cove and off Oak Point as well as past the Rock Wall. The top trout getters are garlic-scented PowerBait, night crawlers or Kastmaster lures.
The latest plant of 1000 pounds of channel catfish went in on August 23. Fish chicken liver, anchovies and mackerel from South Cove to Cowboy Cove to target the cats.
The reservoir is storing 151,315 acre-feet of water, 95 percent of its 160,000 acre-foot capacity. Pumping has stopped and the reservoir will continue to drop through the summer.

NEW MELONES LAKE
Trollers Bag Robust Rainbows
ANGELS CAMP- New Melones has been the top location for quality rainbow trout over the past several weeks, and this week was no exception as the number of trollers targeting the rainbows has increased.
Monte Smith of Gold Country Sport Fishing has put his downriggers in storage for the time being as he will be focusing on Sacramento River salmon during September and October.
However, he found good action for rainbows to 4.14 pounds for his clients this past week. He said,“ We ended up with three fish right off of the bottom in the early morning, losing a few more. I knew the bite was going to slow down at one point in the morning, and as it had been windy in the morning, once the wind died, the bite went with it. We ended up with a flurry at the end of the day with our best action at depths from 48 to 75 feet with my custom spoons on the downrigger.
“ We have landed 50 rainbows on the boat during the past few weeks since I started working the lake, and I am not opposed to putting the downriggers back in the next few months for another go at Melones,” he added.
Bill Llewellan of Glory Hole Sports in Angels Camp said,“ The trout bite doesn’ t show any signs of slowing down, and
They know the best fishing spots and can help you catch the BIG ONE!

Trout fishing is outstanding in the main lake during the cool water months. When things heat up so does the catfish and bass action.
