DAVIS LAKE
Trout Fishing Busts Loose With Cold Weather
PORTOLA – Rainbow trout fishing has broken wide-open on Lake Davis, with trollers, fly fishermen and bank anglers all bagging beautiful fish, now that the surface water temperature has cooled down to 55 degrees.
“ The trout are biting,” said Jeanne Graham of the J and J Grizzly Store and Camping Resort.“ The fishing picked up Friday and was really good yesterday. I’ m ecstatic over the fishing reports I’ m getting. The fish are really nice-sized, with a lot of trout going over 20 inches.”
Trollers are hooking trout from the surface to 15 feet deep while using red dot frog Needlefish and copper / red Dick Nites.
“ Fly fishermen are hooking lots of trout while throwing out black Wooly Buggers and other fly patterns from Lightning Tree to Mosquito Slough,” Graham said.“ Trolling flies is very effective now.”
Bank anglers are concentrating on the Mallard Cove area.“ Fishermen are doing the best tossing out worms and PowerBait,” she tipped.
The catfish, bass and sunfish bite has shut down with the cold water temperatures.
Lake Davis is holding 73,317 acre-feet of water, 88 percent of capacity and 124 percent of average.

DEL VALLE LAKE

LIVERMORE – Targeting catfish is your best bet for catching fish at Lake Del Valle now.
“ Most anglers are using either anchovies, chicken liver or nightcrawlers as bait,” said Cody McGarry of the Rocky Mountain Recreation Company.“ Most of the catfish have been caught in the lower and upper narrows. Make sure you find cover in the water( fallen trees, weed beds, rock walls).” Stripers have started warming up,“ I’ ve had many anglers this weekend come back saying they saw a lot of striper boils, but didn’ t have time to catch up and cast at them,” said McGarry.“ If you happen to

Larry Yee of Daly City caught 3 catfish weighing up to 13.5 lbs. Bob Fahey of San Jose caught 2 catfish weighing a total of 13 pounds.
“ The weather this week has been beautiful here at Lake Del Valle, average temperatures are in the mid 70s with peak temps. in the low 80s. The surface temperature is still sitting at 70 degrees this week,” he added.

LA GRANGE- The bass bite remains slow out of both lakes as the water temperatures continue to be warmer than normal. The fish are feeding on the abundant shad schools, and they are less willing to fall for artificial lures.
Mike Gomez of Berserk Baits has been pre-fishing McClure the past two Saturdays for minimal action despite throwing a variety of offerings at the fish.
He said,“ I only landed 10 fish this past Saturday, and only two of the bass were keeper-size, and the story was the same the previous Saturday with 15 fish resulting in only two keepers. A recent club tournament from the 1790 group out of Modesto produced a winning weight at 11 pounds with 9 pounds getting you paid. The only thing I could get them to go on is plastics on the drop-shot, and I have been scoring the occasional bass with the Pro Worm’ s 124p or Pro Gold 300 at depths from 40 to 65 feet in 80 to 90 feet of water.
“ Every one of the bass are spitting up shad up to 1.5 inches, and the fish are holding around the shad. We see them down there but getting them to go is a different story. With all of the bait, they just aren’ t going for lures right now. I tried reaction baits, jigs, and crankbaits, but the only successful lures have been plastics. The water temperature starts off at 70 degrees in the mornings, and it rises to 75 by the afternoons. Once the weather cools down, the bass will go on a major feed, but right now, they are suspending in deep water. Don Pedro is the same way, and interest in both lakes has waned as there were only 15 boats on the

EAGLE LAKE
Cooling Fall Temps Move Trout And Improve Fishing
SPALDING- With overnight temperatures dropping down into the upper 20’ s the surface temperature of Eagle Lake is falling and is now in the low 60’ s. As a result, the trout are starting to move up toward the surface and anglers are beginning to score more consistently on rainbows that range up to and beyond the 3 pound mark.
The west side of the southern basin offers the best action at this time with lots of chubs stacked up along the east side. For much of the day the best fishing takes place in water that ranges from 15 to 35 feet deep, but early in the morning you can find them in water as shallow as 8 feet.
Bait anglers are struggling to hook up, but trollers are getting rainbows on a variety of offerings. The fast trolling crowd is running Rapalas in bright colors, Speedy Shiners and Needlefish.
Anglers that prefer a slow troll have gotten some fish on grubs and a few on flies. Overall threaded worms without added blades are the best offering if you want to troll less than 2 miles per hour.
Fly fishing hasn’ t really kicked into gear yet, but it should happen soon. Once the water temperature dips into the 50’ s the trout should move tight into the bank and that’ s when the fly guys will really start hooking up.
If you are planning a fall adventure to Eagle and you plan on bringing a RV contact the folks at the Eagle Lake RV Park and ask them about popular Fish Sniffer Special.
EAST DELTA
Pier Anglers Nail Salmon Below Antioch Bridge
STOCKTON- Despite slower action on the other side of the Sacramento River of the Benicia shoreline, the salmon bite from the public piers in Antioch appears to be outstanding.
Dan Mathisen of Dan’ s Delta Outdoors in Oakley reported an outstanding salmon bite from Humphrey’ s Pier in Antioch on Flying C spinners. He said,“ It has slowed down to around 20 fish per day with the full moon this week, but there have been days with over 30 salmon.”
“ Bass fishing has been best with reaction baits such as spinnerbaits and chatterbaits, and there are plenty of small stripers hitting hair jigs and Optima’ s Bad Bubba Shad swimbait,” he said.
These anglers doubled up on king salmon while trolling the Sacramento River near Rio Vista on September 30.

Vince Borges of Vince Borges Outdoors and Phenix Rods reported good action for largemouth bass with the fish chasing the abundant shad. He said,“ Any reaction bait in shad patterns are working such as chatterbaits, spinnerbaits, or flukes, and there is some action on topwater lures with the white River2 Sea Whopper Plopper. I have been targeting flats as the bass are feeding on both tides, and you need current in order to get hit, but we are going through 30 to 50 bass on each trip.”
Randy Pringle, the Fishing Instructor, reported the largemouth bass bite has‘ absolutely’ picked up as the weather has settled down and the shad have infiltrated the Delta. He said,“ We are seeing salmon jumping out of the water, and the largemouth bass bite has been outstanding with reaction baits in shad-patterns. We continue to score with the ima Rock N’ Vibe Suspend in shad colors, and the key is to keep it above the weed lines along the rocks and weeds.
