Fall Trout Bite To Kick In Soon

CHESTER- Water temperatures are on the decline at Lake Almanor, but the trout have yet to move toward the surface. Instead anglers are working the bottom 6 feet of the water column for their hookups. Wind has been an issue at times, but boaters have zero problems trolling most

days. The lake is packed with pond smelt. Since the trout have access to plentiful forage getting the rainbows and browns to strike has been difficult and it takes some patience to hook fish.

There are two schools of thought among trollers right now. Some guys feel they have the best chance while slow trolling at around 1 mph with Gulp! Minnows and threaded‘ crawlers.

Other guys have been trolling at 2.5 to 3 mph with small Rapalas and Speedy Shiners.

Regardless of which approach they choose, when anglers hook up the trout have been rainbows that range from 2 to 4 pounds.

Big Springs, the Peninsula and the A Frame have been the best areas for trolling. You’ ll want to target areas from 30 to 40 feet deep. Be sure to keep your offerings within a few feet of the bottom.

3618 occasional quality rainbow while fishing near the mouth of the Hamilton Branch, Geritol Cove and Rocky Point. Inflated worms and salmon eggs have been the best offerings.

Bass anglers have gotten into some decent topwater action early and late in the day while working walking baits and rip baits. If you don’ t mind fishing bait for your bass, crickets will draw strikes, but you’ ll have to sort though several small bass for every good fish you hook

Nick Smith the Informative Fisherman took a trip out to the East Delta on September 27 and rounded up several stripers on Rat-L-Traps including these fish.

Anglers Get Ready For Trout

IONE – Trout plants are expected to begin at Lake Amador towards the end of October. Meanwhile, anglers are hooking plenty of largemouth bass as the lake moves into its fall pattern.

The Tackle Box Café will open on October 27, just in time for the beginning of trout plants. The resort will announce the date of the first plant on Facebook as soon as it is determined, according to Elizabeth Lockhart of the Lake Amador Resort.

Bass fisherman Michael Coleman reported good largemouth action during his latest trip to the lake on the Amador Facebook page.

“ I got an opportunity to go fishing on Sunday so I decided to go to Lake Amador,” Coleman said.“ With a late start, I figured I’ d run up Jackson Creek to one of my

I caught a bunch more barely keepers, so I decided to switch gears and throw some reaction-style baits. With the wind blowing out of the west, I went to the dam, started throwing a spinner bait, the River2sea bling in the ice color, and picked up another good fish in the 4 pound range.”

“ So I tied on the River2sea Goon crank bait in the‘ I know it’ color and turned around and cranked back up the dam loading the boat,” he said.“ The fish were in the ten foot range and all in the four pound range. Now that I had a solid pattern, I ran to some other banks repeating this technique and ended up having a great day.”

The water level is 18 feet from full and is not expected to go much lower, Lockhart added.
