Rainbow Trout Dominate Spring Angling
FREMONT – Trout fishing reigns supreme at Horseshoe Lake, although smallmouth and largemouth bass and catfish are also landed this time of year. Anglers are picking up the trout while using PowerBait, nightcrawlers, spoons and other offerings throughout the lake.
Anthony Evans of Redwood City topped the catches with an eight-pound rainbow trout. He fooled the fish with garlic PowerBait from the Old Boat Launch, reported Joe Sullivan of the East Bay Regional Park District.
Wes Anderson of Fremont landed a five-pound trout on Fishermen’ s Row while soaking cheese-yellow Powerbait.
Justin Olson of Fremont caught his limit of trout from his boat using PowerBait. Justin and his brother were fishing the backside of Horseshoe Lake.
Brian Schermerhorn limited out with five trout in Kiosk Cove while using a spoon. His biggest two were four-and-a-half pounds and nearly ten pounds.
“ Trevor and friends caught some beautiful trout out at Horseshoe Lake on Fisherman’ s Row,” Sullivan said.“ Trevor also caught a beautiful smallmouth bass on Horseshoe Lake.”
The park district planted Horseshore with 750 pounds of rainbows the week of March 12, while the CDFW stocked the lake with 1000 pounds the week of March 19.

the trout’ s stomach from vent to gills. Next flare the trout’ s gill plates and cut the gills where they join the back of the mouth. Set the knife down and while holding the fish in you left hand, slide your right index finger through the center of the gills and down the throat. Get a firm grip on the gills and steadily pull downward toward the tail and the gills and guts will detach. Finish up by removing the bloodline followed by a good rinse.
Certain dishes call for filleted trout. Filleting is a simple task that is easily mastered with a little practice. To fillet a trout, you’ ll need a keenly honed fillet knife. Begin by cutting downward just behind the gill plates. When you feel the spine turn the blade ninety degrees and work the knife down to the tail in one smooth deliberate sweep. When filleting trout you don’ t want to remove the skin from the fillet. The meat of trout is delicate and if the skin is removed the fillet will fall apart. Using most recipes, the trout fillets are cooked with the skin attached and the meat is lifted off the skin just before it is eaten.
day being hooked. Drifting egg imitations and PMD nymphs has been Kirk’ s go to method. He related that some dry fly action takes place from late morning into the afternoon.
If fly fishing isn’ t your bag, Mike Bogue of Mike Bogue’ s Guide Service and Robert Weese of Northern California Guide Service offer conventional tackle trout trips on the Sacramento.
When working the shallower runs and riffles, Bogue utilizes back trolled crankbaits to cover the water. He probes the deeper water areas with bait and glow bugs. These deep water areas are seldom hit by the fly guys and the action can be very good as a result.
Weese also uses roe and eggs, but his preferred offing is a live cricket.
If you’ d like to catch some wild rainbows and perhaps a steelhead or two up in the Redding area, give Robert Weese or Mike Bogue a call. They are two of the best sticks on the river and will work hard to get you fish. To contact Weese, call( 530) 755-7196. To reach Mike Bogue, dial( 530) 246-8457.
RIO VISTA
Cold Storms Challenge Striper & Sturgeon Fishermen
RIO VISTA- Angling interest remains light as cold weather and storms prevail over Northern California with some taking advantage of breaks in the weather to chase striped bass and sturgeon.
Bait fishing for both striped bass and sturgeon was difficult over the last few days with windy conditions according to Craig Kamikawa at Fisherman’ s Warehouse in Sacramento.
“ Honestly we’ re still waiting for sturgeon fishing to take off in Cache. There’ s fish up there but not in numbers like we’ ve seen. I think most hung a right and went up the( Old) Sacramento instead. The striper fishing is better but bait fishing really isnt ideal with the weak tides this week plus the wind,” Kamikawa discussed.
“ Guys trolling are doing a little better but the water is staining up a little bit. The west bank in Rio is good and so is the stretch from Vierras up to the Isleton Bridge.”
Tom Amberson continues to find striped bass by running and gunning around different area of the Delta. In a recent Facebook post, Amberson and his wife Michelle found good success while throwing Delta Wood Bomber topwater baits.

There are a lot of fish such as bass that provide boneless fillets, but with trout there remains a final step after the fillet has been removed from the trout’ s body. For this step, you’ ll need a needle nose pliers or a specialized bone pulling pliers often used by sushi chefs. In either case, lay the fillet on a firm surface with the skin side down. Using your index finger feel along the middle of the fillet. You’ ll discover a line of small stiff bones. Grab the bones with the pliers and pull them out of the fillet one at a time, using firm steady pressure.
A lot of folks are reluctant to keep trout in a cooler on multiple day trips, fearing that the fish will spoil. If you put your cleaned bagged trout in a cooler with just ice, the ice and water mixture that results will be about 32 degrees. If you take the same cooler full of ice, bury your bagged trout in the ice and then liberally sprinkle rock salt or even table salt over the ice the temperature will plummet to as low as 4 degrees. Obviously, if you salt your ice and the temperature drops below freezing there is no chance for your trout to spoil.
