Tasmanian Devils For Stripers?
The Tasmanian Devil is a very unique lure that is best known here on the West Coast for it’ s ability to hook trout, but the fact of the matter is that the Tasmanian Devil will hook just about any predatory gamefish that forages on small to medium size baitfish.
Here in California, Delta stripers spend a lot of their time pursuing threadfin shad that range from 2 to 4 inches long. Anglers have just started to realize that the Tasmanian Devil in its larger sizes is just about ideal for imitating the shad that stripers feed on.
If you’ ve never seen a Tasmanian Devil, the lure consists of a hollow weighted torpedo shaped central core surrounded with plastic including curved wings out each side. The result is a shad shaped lure that has a unique dancing, fluttering action when trolled or retrieved. Some anglers have been using the Tasmanian Devil while plugging, while others have been enjoying success while trolling the bait. For trolling water 8 to 9 feet deep anglers are adding a small 1 to 1.5 ounce trolling weight about 48 inches above the lures to get it into the strike zone. Some guys are experimenting and tipping their Tasmanian Devils with bucktail adorned hooks while others are using super glue to attach white or chartreuse swimtail grubs to the bait’ s hook. These additions give the bait a larger profile and cause the lure to put off additional vibration when pulled through the water.
