NEW HOGAN RESERVOIR cont . anchovies ,” said Monte Smith of Gold Country Sportfishing . “ I wasn ’ t even able to get all four rods fishing before we had our first hook up of the day , but it came unbuttoned after a short fight . The bite was not red-hot in any way , but we had some flurries here and there .”
The next trip produced five stripers for two anglers , Mike and Mike Tran . The fish averaged 3 to 4 pounds each .
“ However , the fishing slowed down on my latest trip there . Paul and Gerti landed 3 fish and missed 4 others ,” said Smith .
“ A friend was at New Hogan on last Thursday , and he reported just one strike all day ,” said Smith . “ The bite has slowed down and I ’ m not sure why .”
Smith noted 95 percent of the fish were females and normally the fish are almost all males .

lbs . 10 oz . down around 34 feet . We also landed some smaller 13 ” bows ,” reported Gary Burns of Take It To the Limit Guide Service . “ This is the first week that the water temperature has reached 70 degrees and with that we are starting to more shad hitting the surface in open water .”
“ Some friends fished a long day Saturday , but it payed off ,” said Burns . “ They caught and released two big browns at 60 ’ rolling shad , 8 big ‘ bows to 6 lbs . and one 13 ” kokanee between 45 to 55 feet using different colored dodgers and Paulina Peak Wickiup Spinner Hoochies on the main body .”
“ The bass bite on New Melones has been really good ,” reported John Liecthy of Xperience Fishing Guide Service . “ The water temperature is approaching 70 degrees and the springtime spawn is fading . Postspawn sh are feeding on shad , baby bass , crappie and bluegill , making reaction type baits a good choice .”
“ Try using spinnerbaits , crankbaits and ripbaits to draw aggressive strikes ,” he said . “ The topwater fishing has been hot and cold , but finesse presentations never fail and continue to produce quality fish . Shakeyheads , dropshots and wacky rigs will be tied on for most days .”
“ Crappie continues to be caught and are giving anglers some fun times on the water ,” reported Gene Hildebrand of Glory Hole Sports . “ Also some nice bluegill have been landed . By far the most popular baits have been live medium shiners and crappie jigs .”
New Melones Lake level has been holding steady for the last 30 days and currently at 1057.20 ft ., 30.80 ft . from full .

OROVILLE LAKE
King Salmon Available , But Few Are Trying
OROVILLE – Lake Oroville is rising from the spring snowmelt in the Feather River watershed .

Albert Berends took a trip to Lake Mendocino in early May and caught several bass , including this beauty .
Photo courtesy of ALBERT BERENDS , Sacramento .
The reservoir is currently holding 2,475,717 acre-feet of water , 70 percent of capacity and 85 percent of average . The lake elevation is 824.11 above sea level , Fishing pressure for the lake ’ s king salmon has been very sparse lately , since striper and shad fishing on the Feather and Sacramento rivers has drawn the attention of most local anglers .
For kings , Rob Reimers of Rustic Rob ’ s Guide Service recommended trolling around 35 to 40 feet deep around the green bridge with Brad ’ s cut plugs , filled with a piece of anchovy scented with Pro-Cure Bloody Tuna , or Speedy Shiners .
Bass fishing reports are also few and far between . Anglers can hook spotted bass at 20 to 35 feet deep while using Robo Worms on drop shot rigs , Senkos and jigs . Most of the fish are in the 12 to 15 inch “ slot ,” with an occasional larger fish .

PARDEE LAKE
Trout Plants Increased to 2,000 Pounds Per Week !
IONE - “ Based on customer feedback we have increased the trout plants to 2000 lbs . per week for the month of May ,” reported the Rocky Mountain Recreation Company . “ The first 2000 lbs . planted were last week . Once May is over we will continue to evaluate how much we should plant based on the weather conditions and customer feedback and attendance .”
The plants have perked up trout action for shore anglers using PowerBait and nightcrawers and trollers employing nightcrawlers , spoons and spinners behind dodgers and flashers .
Jeff from Windsor caught 5 brown trout up to 1-1 / 2 pounds while using nightcrawlers on a recent fishing adventure .
Channel catfish and black bass fishing is solid , now that the surface water temperatures has risen to about 70 degrees .
The carp are spawning on shore and laying their eggs . The catfish will chase the carp and eat the eggs .
John Liechty of Xperience Fishing Guide Service reported a “ solid smallmouth bite in the main lake with plastic worms on 4-lb . test line and a long leader in the gin clear water with visibility to 25 feet .”
The crappie bite is strong as well near the Tom Sawyer Bridge and the mud hole . Anglers are fishing crappie jigs for the best success on the slabsides .
The bluegill bite is picking up by the launch ramp . Use wax worms , red worms and small jigs for the sunfish .
The kokanee bite is slow , although the elusive fish are being spotted from 40-70 feet deep . Use hoochies , spinners and spoons , tipped with white corn , near the dam and in the Mokelumne River arm .
