PYRAMID LAKE
Light Crowds Greet Cutthroat Anglers
RENO- Angling pressure is almost non-existent on Pyramid Lake. This year’ s shallow water bite has gone from mediocre to the odd trickle of fish cruising the beaches. The bite never was very good, and at this point just about everybody has given up. For persistent anglers, Pelican Point has been the best spot. Most of the fish hanging around Pelican are the Summit Lake variety, but the occasional large Pilot Peak fish in the 11-15 pound range has spiced up the action.
Meanwhile, at deep drop-off beaches like Blockhouse and Spider Point, anglers continue to endure a slow steady bite on fish that aren’ t interested in spawning. Most of these fish tend to be fish more interested in feeding than breeding, but they aren’ t very concentrated.
Now that the shore bite is winding down, boaters are seeing an uptick in the trolling bite. Dragging U20 Flatfish along the bottom is a good way to catch Cutthroat Trout any day of the year. However, this technique works best in known Cutthroat holding spots.
A properly trolled Flatfish only is moving in the 1.4-1.8 MPH range. Thus, it can be better to locate the fish by trolling with lures like 4.0 Apex Lures and size 4 Lyman’ s that cover a lot more water. Apex and Lyman’ s tend to troll best in the 2.5-3.0 MPH range.
The Truckee River is high but the color is good. Wading at this time could be somewhat treacherous. Angling pressure is virtually none, but intrepid anglers will start pounding the water soon. As the spring run-off tapers

QUARRY LAKES
Large Trout, Catfish Reward Horseshoe Anglers
FREMONT – Trout and catfish action has been productive at the Quarry Lakes Recreation Area lately. The most recent trout plant into Horseshoe Lake by the park district was 1000 pounds of rainbows stocked the week of May 14.
“ Both trout and some big catfish have been caught lately,” said Joe Sullivan of the East Bay Regional Park District.“ Please remember to catch and release smallmouth and largemouth bass.”
Big fish honors for the past couple of weeks go to Jay Japec of San Leandro, who caught an eight-pound catfish while using a white marshmallow along Fishermen’ s Row.

of Fremont landed some big trout, including one weighing four pounds, 10 ounces and the other going seven pounds and one ounce. Wes was using his trademark bait of night crawlers and was fishing along Fishermen’ s Row,” said Sullivan.
“ On one trip, Bernie Helwig of Milpitas caught his limit of trout in two-and-a-half hours,” noted Sullivan.“ He said he was using‘ trout bait’ and he was fishing from his boat in the front of Horseshoe Lake. He did so well, he returned the next day, and this time caught his limit in 45 minutes.”
Raj Pradham of Fremont reeled in a seven-and-a-half-pound trout while using a jig at Fishermen’ s Row.
Anthony Evans of Redwood City caught five trout using PowerBait along Fishermen’ s Row, and his grandfather, Elliot Diaz of Belmont, caught three trout using Kastmasters and PowerBait.

acrobatic fish that start at about 12 inches. They top out at 20 plus inches and more than 5 pounds.
Captain Mike Bogue of Mike Bogue’ s Guide Service has been putting his clients on really nice trout, including a 5 plus pounder that was landed on May 5.
With the river running low at 8,500 cfs, Mike has been carefully back trolling with 2.5 Yakima Bait Mag Lips.
“ The trout are holding in the deeper area for most of the day and the Mag Lip has proven to be a lure that dives deep enough to get to the fish and its action triggers strikes,” say Bogue.
Fly guys have been doing well while working the river too. Ordinarily most fly fishing is done from drift boats, but with the flows ramped down anglers have a golden opportunity to get out of the boat and fish the river while wading.
There have been some dry fly opportunities for fly guys in the afternoon, but subsurface nymphs, beads and egg imitations are drawing most of the strikes.
There are several guides that routinely fish the river for spring rainbows. Mike Bogue of Mike Bogue’ s Guide Service is one of the best. To reach Mike Bogue, dial( 530) 246-8457.
RIO VISTA
Troll Plugs or Drift Live Bait for Quality Stripers
RIO VISTA- Striped bass continued to provide excellent action for anglers braving the wind, while sturgeon fishing interest has all but disintegrated.
Anglers on the troll found striped bass early before winds hit the region, according to Alan Fong, manager at Fisherman’ s Warehouse in Sacramento.
“ A lot of the stripers are staying a little deeper, which means they might be postspawners heading back to the bay. Most everyone is deep trolling for them, but you have to be on and off the water early before the winds kick up,” he tipped.
“ If you’ re trying to bait fish, you’ ll need to expect a lot of smaller fish. The warm( ing) water has a lot of them hanging around
