stripers during his past three guided trips on
Saturday, Sunday and Monday.
“We ended up with 6 limits Saturday, 6
limits to 10 pounds Sunday and 4 limits to 6
pounds Monday,” said Netzel. “We released
a 26 lb. striper Saturday. We trolled both
deep-diving and shallow-diving Yo-Zuri
Crystal Minnows.”
Netzel has finished his spring Delta
striper trips and will now be booking trips for
rainbow trout and king salmon at Folsom
Lake and kokanee salmon at Stampede

and they are everywhere. You’re better off
drifting live bait on the San Joaquin rather
than using cut bait,” he added.
Sturgeon fishing interest has completely
dissipated, according to Fong, while
others head east to smaller sloughs for
largemouth bass.
ROLLINS/SCOTTS FLAT
RESERVOIR
Bass Bite Comes On Strong!
COLFAX “Bass fishing has gone from
fair to great in about a week,” exclaimed
Jason Pleece of Meadow Vista. “Over the
past 5 days I’ve fished both Rollins and
Scotts Flat and I’ve gotten in on some
outstanding bass fishing at both lakes.”
“I fished Rollins yesterday evening and
I got a total of 17 bass to the kayak. Some
bass seem to be bedded and others are
still in a prespawn mode. I caught fish on
everything I tried. A Z-Man Ned Rig worked
best, but I got fish on Senkos, flukes and
Rooster Tail spinners. I’d say about 75%
of the bass were spots and the rest were
smallmouths. My biggest fish was a 17 inch
spot. I got several fish that were in the 2
pound class.”
“I didn’t try for trout at Rollins, but I did
talk to a guy bank fishing at Free Loaders
Cove that had two rainbows and a 16
inch brown. He said he got them on mini-
crawlers under a bobber,” Pleece related.
“The fishing at Scotts Flat is very similar
to the fishing at Rollins, but I think the
spawning cycle is a little behind at Scotts
because the water is colder up there,”
disclosed Pleece.
“In 3 hours at Scotts I landed 11

smallmouths and 2 largemouths. My
biggest fish was a 3.88 pound largemouth.
I got that fish on a chatter bait teamed with
a swimming Senko trailer. For numbers the
Ned Rig worked well as did 3 inch grubs
slow rolled on a darter head, the key is
working the jig slowly,” tipped Pleece.
“I didn’t try for trout at Scotts either,
but as I paddled around the lake, I did
mark a lot of fish that I believe are planter
rainbows,” Pleece concluded.

SACRAMENTO AREA
Shad Schools Hit The Metro
Region
SACRAMENTO – American shad fishing
is heating up on the Sacramento River in
the metropolitan area as the hard-fighting
members of the herring family arrive for
their spring spawning session.
“The shad action is heating up at Miller
Park and Discovery Park,” said Carter
Cruickshank at Broadway Bait Rod & Gun.
“The anglers are catching the fish on an
array of shad darts and flies. The hottest
colors are neon green with red heads and
white with pink heads.”
“Striped bass fishing is still good for
shore anglers and boaters using sardines
and pileworms in the same areas, but most
anglers have switched over to shad,” he
said
For stripers, Dennis Pfanner at
Sacramento Pro Tackle recommended
fishing bloodworms and pileowrms on the
Sacramento between the I Street Bridge
and Discovery Park. “Most of the keepers
are small fish in the 18 to 21 inch range,”
he ntoed.
Boaters continue to see top-notch striped
bass action on the San Joaquin River from
Pirates’ Lair to Antioch. James Netzel of
Tight Lines Guide Service reported limits of
EL SOBRANTE – “The good news is
that we planted 3,500 lbs .of Mt Lassen
Trout on May 3,” said Marcella Shoemaker
of the Rocky Mountain Recreation
Company. “The trout bite is back. The water
still has a clarity issue, but people are still
catching fish. Kastmasters, Power Eggs
and chartreuse PowerBait are producing
the best results. “
