seemed to work for most. However, several of the top 10 fisherman caught large browns on rolled shad.

The trout this year were amazingly large, compared to previous years. Brett Brady and Ron Huffard won the derby with an amazing record total weight of 26 pounds! The 25th place winner had a bag weight of 16.94 pounds! As a comparison, John and I won the derby in 2016, with a total weight of only 14.94 pounds. According to the folks at Kokanee Power, there were a total of 33 brown trout weighed in, and 27 of them were over 4 pounds! The Big Trout of the derby was a 9-pound German Brown caught by 10-year-old Ty Collins of San Ramon. Several other browns in the 5 to 7 3 / 4 pound range were also caught, and several nice rainbows to 4 1 / 2 pounds

were weighed in.

The secret to placing high in this derby was to catch one – or two – big fish over 4 pounds. Our luck just wasn’ t there this year. For example, on Sunday we fished the mouth of the“ Gooseneck” in mid-morning using the red / gold UV RB Tackle spoons that Ron Huffard had given us the night before. We caught several rainbows to“ almost” 3 pounds. Then in early afternoon, Brett Brady and Ron went to the same spot in the“ Gooseneck”, fished the identical spoon, and came away with a nice 4 ½ pound brown that iced first place for them!!

The Shasta Lake Trout derbies are always a lot of fun for all of us. Shasta Lake is an amazing fishery, not only for trout, but for bass, crappie, and king salmon as well. The derbies always feature an included dinner at the Lions Club in Lakehead with excel-

lent food and great camaraderie. The weigh ins are always produced at the newly remodeled Bass Hole and Brews bar and grill in Lakehead that features many craft beers, great cocktails and good food.
