PORTOLA – Trout fishing is “good but
not red hot” at Lake Davis at this time,
revealed Jeanne Graham of the J&J Grizzly
Store and Camping Resort.
“Trollers are experiencing the top action
on rainbows while fishing lures at 10 to 15
feet deep,” said Graham. “The best area is
the east side of the lake. The top lures are
copper/red Dick Nites and Needlefish in the
red dot frog and green dot frog patterns.”
Guide Ed Dillard reported putting 8 trout
up to 5.8 pounds in his boat during his
latest trolling adventure on Davis.
“The lake’s north end is producing fish
averaging 17 to 19 inches long, while the
south end is yielding larger fish in the 20 to
24 inch range,” said Graham.
Bank fishermen are doing best while
tossing out PowerBait and nightcrawlers in
Mallard Cove and at Camp Five.
Graham hasn’t heard any reports of black
bass and sunfish success by anglers lately,
although that should change as the water
temperature warms up.
Lake Davis is holding 82,660 acre feet
of water, 98 percent of capacity and 121
percent of average. All of the boat ramps
are open.
Shore anglers and boaters are picking
up rainbow trout in the 12 to 18 inch range
at Frenchman Lake. Mountain Hardware
in Truckee advised bait fishermen to toss
out inflated nightcrawlers off Turkey Point.
Fly fishing enthusiasts should fish midges
suspended or on a slow retrieve.
Frenchman is holding 52,986 acre feet
of water, 101 percent of capacity and 131
percent of average.

EAGLE LAKE
Stormy Weather Greets
Opening Weekend Anglers
SPAULDING - “The 2018 Eagle Lake
opener was a good news, bad news
proposition,” related Cliff Spediacci of Hook
& Ladder Guide Service. “The good news
is that the water level is up, boat launching
is going smoothly and we know from the
spring egg take at Pine Creek that there are
big numbers of rainbows up to 6 pounds in
the lake.”
“The bad news for the opener came in
the form of very unstable weather. In the
36 hours leading up to the opener we had
big temperature swings and periods of cold
rain. When you’ve got that kind of instability
in the spring it’s going to have a negative
effect on the fishing no matter what species
you are targeting,” observed Spediacci.
“I spoke with the DFW fish counters
on opening day and they had recorded a
sum total of 16 trout. I’m sure some folks
will see this as a red flag, but I’m certain
that the trout just have weather induced
lockjaw. I’m going to hit the lake myself next
Wednesday and I have my first guide trip of
the year next Saturday. With some stable
warm weather, I expect to see a major turn
around in the action,” Spediacci concluded.
